Flails

I just realized... There are no flails (some people wrongly call them "morningstars") in the game, nor one-handed nor two-handed.
Why? They're *great* weapons, expecially on horseback or if you want to shatter a shield to small tiny wooden chips. And they look really really powerful.
I've searched in the old topics, but I didn't find anything, did anyone else misses them too?

M&B engine doesn't currently do area damage, that's why there aren't any flails.

Because, the business end of a flail can hit in multiple places at once (an area).

can't you just have it hit multiple targets one by one along its trajectory? are you saying that currently if you swing a great sword across 3 bandits it will only hit 1 of them?

I think there is more information about it on some other threads (in which Armagan address area damage and the like). I don't have any details on the engine's workings, just random bits that Armagan has said from other threads.

AFAIK though, that's how it works. If you run your sword across three enemies, only one of them would get hit in the swing. Probably done like that for performance reasons.

Probably done like that for not being completely unrealistic, since when can you cut 3 people in two with a sword? heck the sword should stop or sink into the first opponent and not even finish the whole animation, i posted this in the other thread already. Nevermind me, im just venting myself a bit

It would also require some (probably not so trivial) physical calculations for the flail head which can move freely on it's chain.

Well, "hitting" them doesn't necessarily mean "cutting in two" and are completely separate issues. Try swinging a sword across three people and see if only one of them is cut.

The head of the flail would have to be swinging around all the time or it wouldn't look right. And if it gets stopped for whatever reason it would be useless for attack or defense until you got it swinging again. Probably too much trouble do do it right.

Yeah, there's that as well. Get five guys with flails and you have a huge performance hit since you have the calculations for the flail heads, then you have the calculations for them colliding with multiple objects as well.

Just a few comments:

- The flails were actually an answer to the heavily armored knights, whose armor was quite proficient to deflect the sword cuts. This weapon is actually rather tricky to block, because it tend to reach behind the blocking blade or shield (hence it should have high to-hit rating). The spiked ball is able to petenrate and/or deform plate armor, possibly hindering target's mobility.
- The disadvantage of the weapon lies in the fact that it's unsuitable for parrying - you cannot stop the opponent's blade with it. You can use some form of active block, like sidestep and attempt to trap the blade with the chain but that's tricky and unreliable. Hence, flails were almost exclusively used with a shield.

It was also a favorite weapon of Czech Hussites, who called it with a nice word "řemdih" (quite unopronounciable for you of non-Slavonic origin

Yes, it would be nice to see it in the game, but I remember the devs saying it's impossible due to the engine limitations. What a pity.

Hussites used it mostly because it was cheap and easy to build, and it took down the thousands of knights that the pope sent against them.

Did i mention the general that thought of these ideas was blind?

Jan Zizka was only blind on one eye, he lost the other eye later in his life during the siege of the castle Rabi. He was, however, an excellent general, he also introduced the military use of war wagons ("hradba vozova") and always forced the enemy to battle in a terrain that favored his troops.

He never lost a single battle and defeated all the crusades that united states of Catholic Europe sent against him.

It's rather unpronounciable by anyone except for Czechs, because the letter 'Ř' (R with caron) is exclusively a Czech consonant

Nasty :p (exclusive sounds are a pain when learning languages)
