As I've said in the Christmas thread I've started to get into oly weightlifting which is hella fun but I used to do mostly powerlifting (I had a total of 400 which is just shy of 900lbs and a wilks of 300 whilst 5'7 @ 70kg) Honestly raw strength will get you no where at the start in olympic weightlifting I would say, my clean being only ~60kg whilst I could squat high bar squat 170 kinda shows that.
Powerlifting is the ****, man. Currently sitting at a 420kg (blaze it fggt) total, which at my 74kg is just over 300wilks. I intend on competing in some two years, or when I get a 350~400Wilkes (which should be at around a 500kg total).
Still, it's strange that you can only clean 60kg yet had a 400kg total. I don't even do WL and can hang power clean 70kg. Did you not do cleans at all in your PL training?

So your combined total for bench and dead was only 230? You must have the strangest ratio I have seen for while.
My bench was weak as ****.
That's what was holding me back from hitting the holy 1k.

Oh I can clean >100kg easy. I'm short so getting under the bar as of now isn't a problem. The problem is the jerk. I try to power jerk to freedom but I just can't lock out in time, and I don't feel comfortable with my technique right now for the normal Jerk. So that's why my total is low.
The snatch is just ****ing difficult all around and I know strength wise I can do more but getting yourself under the bar and locking yourself out before the momentum runs out is not only tricky it's also scary as ****. You can't have any hesistation, once you commit to it you have to go with it or you have a high chance to snap your ****.

Also dude, you should compete anyway, even without a wilks of 400 competing is still a good idea, you get to meet a bunch of cool people and you can set a standard that next time you compete you try and beat. There's literally no reason not to go and compete if you have the means to, even if you have a mediocre wilks.

And I bet my set of ovaries that that very body type is repulsive to most women. This is athletic and hot. This is gross and screams overcompensation.
Good thing 99.99% of people who are at the gym aren't there to become IFBB competitors right?
Whilst I agree that the new trend of doing a 5 day body split is stupid and the good old powerlifting method is better, a extremely large majority of people who go to the gym will never achieve the IFBB look because they're not on AAS and it's not their job.

The oly lifts are extremely more technical than SQ/BP/DL, which, come to think of it, is probably one of the reasons why PL is growing much faster (and will probably become bigger) than WL. I can't not think of the jerk as a push press - and the snatch is downright magic to me. By the way, since you can squat highbar squat +170kg and clean +100kg, where do your C&J and snatch sit on?

Anyway, PL is pretty small here, so I don't even think we have meets regularly. I should start looking around and maybe even show up at one, if only to watch, at least.

My total as of the moment is 120kg. 67 C&J and 53 snatch.
That is without a coach, I should be getting one soonish and then I should see them going up quite a bit.
There's a picture that sometimes gets posted in the /owg/ in /fit/ that is basically a drawing of a person at the start of the snatch, an arrow to the right, then "Magic happens" and then a person holding the weight in the snatch jerk.

EDIT:
Found it

Aye, I'd get a coach, specially considering it's WL and there's a chance of snapping your **** up if you do stuff wrong.
ColonicAcid 说:
Pretty much how I understand it.  I should check /owg/ more often, specially considering how I only go to /plg/ anymore. I recon these are the only two places in there where people have some idea of what they're talking about.

Aye, the tripcoders generally know what they're doing, Pas knows his theory, geordil has a nice total and pent is just overall nice help.
Honestly I think PL is growing more in general because you have people like Candito actively helping it to grow. We don't have any such figure in OW. Though hookgrip is a ****ing art form.

Ilya Ilyin is a ****ing monster, god damn. But yeah, I don't know, it seems to me the people who could go out and try to help WL grow go instead to other places, such as Klokov, who finds more money doing crossfit.

I would rather have expected you to be easily able to deadlift over 200. Sick squat anyway.

Me too. I mean, with a 170kg highbar squat a 200kg deadlift should be very much within the realm of possibility.

I could probs sumo squat 200 but I don't believe in the movement as an athlete, I would much rather do the full conventional deadlift, and I dunno, maybe I didn't add enough weight or I just didn't train it, unlike squats I can't do heavy deadlifts everyday or my CNS would be wrecked.
I should become bulgarian.

Why would you squat, let alone deadlift everyday? It's nevertheless highly unusual for one to squat more than he can deadlift.

If you adjust intensity and volume, you can do it.

Anybody have any solid recommendations for a whey protein product? Anything that should be absolutely known about whey protein powders?

What exactly would you like to know? Brands? Dymatize makes some good stuff, ON's Gold Standard is very good, too. Mix it with milk, mix it with water. Have it whenever.

Prepare for some nasty farts in the first week(s).

Primarily just which brand to get or what brands to compare, but also if there is something critical to have added in as well. I'm trying to learn up on the science behind it, but I never find this stuff clear-cut enough. (Probably because it just isn't) should I just get 100% whey ordo I look for amino acid mumbo jumbos?

If you're on a budget cheap will do. Some might come with BCAAs (so you don't even need to buy them separately), some are hydrolyzed (supposedly has faster absorption). There's not much to it. Just think of it as powdered chicken if you didn't get your protein for the day - you don't even need whey in the first place if you're getting your protein from other sources, such as milk, meats, eggs, etc.
As I said, Optimum Nutrition and Dymatize are good brands, but I can't help you much with that as I haven't tried many different brands.

Anyway, it's tough getting objective info on supplements, as there's quite a deal of money and marketing involved compared to too little research.

Gold Standard 100% Whey Natural from ON. You missed a great sale but you can still pick up 5 pound  tubs for $50 on Amazon most of the time. You could have had them for $35 a couple of weeks ago. They go on sale a lot just  before Christmas usually. If you have a BJ's or Costo card they sell EAS and some others real cheap for around about $25 if you're on a budget. ON is great though. The flavors are good,  and they mix well with everything. You can add some milk, oj, or almond milk to a blender with a frozen banana, and have a good shake.
Muscle Pharm Combat Powder isn't that bad either. The orange creamsicle is good. I prefer ON though.

Thought we already had at least one fitness/lifting thread.
Been training quite a lot recently (or had been till I strained a muscle across my shoulder) mainly for judo but have been doing a bit of mma as well. Trying to gain some lean weight at the moment but its really not easy to fit strength training around technical sessions. Can realistically manage about 3 sessions of lifting a week without interfering that much with technical development. Really glad I can use my shoulder again though.
Edit:
Oh and body weight exercises are certainly not useless, they're pretty damn handy for both general fitness and for sport specific training.
