As I've said in the Christmas thread I've started to get into oly weightlifting which is hella fun but I used to do mostly powerlifting (I had a total of 400 which is just shy of 900lbs and a wilks of 300 whilst 5'7 @ 70kg) Honestly raw strength will get you no where at the start in olympic weightlifting I would say, my clean being only ~60kg whilst I could squat high bar squat 170 kinda shows that.
Powerlifting is the ****, man. Currently sitting at a 420kg (blaze it fggt) total, which at my 74kg is just over 300wilks. I intend on competing in some two years, or when I get a 350~400Wilkes (which should be at around a 500kg total).
Still, it's strange that you can only clean 60kg yet had a 400kg total. I don't even do WL and can hang power clean 70kg. Did you not do cleans at all in your PL training?
Oh I can clean >100kg easy. I'm short so getting under the bar as of now isn't a problem. The problem is the jerk. I try to power jerk to freedom but I just can't lock out in time, and I don't feel comfortable with my technique right now for the normal Jerk. So that's why my total is low.
The snatch is just ****ing difficult all around and I know strength wise I can do more but getting yourself under the bar and locking yourself out before the momentum runs out is not only tricky it's also scary as ****. You can't have any hesistation, once you commit to it you have to go with it or you have a high chance to snap your ****.
Also dude, you should compete anyway, even without a wilks of 400 competing is still a good idea, you get to meet a bunch of cool people and you can set a standard that next time you compete you try and beat. There's literally no reason not to go and compete if you have the means to, even if you have a mediocre wilks.
