Fief Without Vassalation?

I'm pretty sure that it impossible to gain a fief without first becoming a vassal of someone. This is correct, no? Assuming of course that we are talking about Native without mods or tweaking.

In other words, there is no way to capture a fief for yourself if you are a mercenary, right?

I am fairly certain if you go up to a caravan and attack them or if you go up to a lord and do "I demand something from you" and then "Surrender or Die" you will go negative faction with the country and it will allow you to attack castles/cities.  For the most part though you go entirely KoS to them so you need to be ready for war.

In Warband, Yes!

Step 1:Just attack a farmer or a lord of a kingdom - To get a negative relation with the faction.

Step 2: Conquest a city or a castle of this faction!

Try to raise some huscarls to assault a town  and knights to match every army on the battlefield.

Hah! Beautiful. So it would actually be possible for my mercenary band to start our own little empire, if I chose the right time to strike, of course.

This means you start your own kingdom and become king, which means that any faction can declare war on you at any time and send their full force to conquer you. Beware.

Well that was assumed.

On another note, if you choose the commoner background and never become a vassal, do you get to choose your banner when you create your own kingdom? How does that work?

I think you can also talk to some lord and demanding something -> start the fight.

You will be able to select your banner when your kingdom is created (when the game recognize its existing). Not sure about female player.

Same thing.

AFAIK the only time you don't get a banner is when you're a female commoner and marry into a faction. I assume you could still get one via the cheatmenu, though.

Did this myself, the things that made it rough though were the fact that once you become king/queen of a faction you can no longer hire yourself out as a mercenary to an existing faction (makes sense but spoiled my RP idea of mercs with a home base), but you can do quests for lords of any other faction/town quests etc.

It is quite liberating, even though I never made any alliances persay I was able to attack any faction at will and assist the factions that were being beat up/I favoured.  Especially useful was riding around and freeing lords/kings from other faction castles, pretty easy to do and +relation with lord/king/faction.  Since player actions don't count towards war damage (and I had no lords) the only way I could forge alliances was through them or me requesting this when the enemy faction were fighting on multiple fronts.

Problems only really arose for me when the faction I'd taken my one castle/fief from had no wars and attacked me with their whole army.  I thought I could hold them off but my castle was a hard one to defend. Either have a larger garrison (mine was ~300) or a more defensible castle.

Well your troops still are mercs, only now you're the boss. All troops in M&B are mercs. What you'd actually do in reality as a feudal lord is levy troops from your vassals. That's how feudalism worked, you were given land in return for military service. But of course M&B's version of feudalism only has two tiers (namely the king and the lords), so you can't do that and instead have to rely on mercenary troops that you pay wages to. I've been waiting for years for a mod that actually makes the M&B world feudal. So far no luck.

Its possible to get a banner with out becoming a vassal or owning a Fief if you get to an high reputation level (found out when cheating my rep up to see what happens when meeting lords etc), think its about 1K+ if I remember rightly.

Now you should work on your "Right to rule".  Read about it in my thread called "becoming a king".  I haven't done it yet.

I did it in the original M&B.  I was up to about 5 cities, and 4 castles or so (maybe 5-6 towns too), but eventually EVERYONE was at war with me.  It wasn't too bad, but I had to constantly babysit my holdings and my weekly payout was over 20,000 dinars.

Now you can get lords to join you and assign them to castles and cities!

Not sure but I think you get one once your renown is high enough.  Maybe not in Warband.

On  the note of all troops being mercenaries, yeah I wonder if it would be as easy as it sounds to rebame troop wages to just something ambiguous implying their contribution to the total cost os supplying your party.
