So, basically, if you unified many countries to be one country, with one powerful regime to steer them all (no oligarchy, powerful as in good to reign the countries). Higher taxes for the rich, while supporting the poor even more. Everyone gets work.

An example would be Europe. You would unify the countries, so you would have:
*Iberia
*Western Republic
*Eastern Republic
*Scandinavia
*Britannia
*Turkia
*Balkan

Those regimes would all be represented in the European council, located in... Berlin? Amsterdam? Somewhere central.
Would this work? If no, why not. Of course there will be some rioting but you have some nice police force to take those down  Races and religions would be mixed, so there would be less hate between different people.

Cultural differences will create problems in no time. If you want something like this, it has to be a decentralized system, at least until a common cultural identity has been achieved by a greater part of the population.

Western "Republic", capital in Berlin sounds good. I|ll go ahead and start the tanks.
Watch out dutchies, here were go again!

Look at how the largest countries are doing now. Are they doing it any better than smaller ones?

Nothing forces people of different cultures to live together. Also, less borders, you can move more freely around. And these countries would be in military control of eachother, so if one of them goes insane, the others can stop them.

If the Frenchies wouldn|t be the meanies thez are stop holing in, that wouldn|t be necessary
It|s not exactly our fault.

On a more serious note>
That|s partly the though behind the EU. And, honestly, cultural differences would pull those things apart, lest you|d do something like Grauuu said.

Edit:
I apologise for the atrocious spelling. As I mentioned earlier, keyboard and layout don`t match and I have no means of changing it since the system is locked.

Wouldn't that be cool. Another superpower.

National identity then starts playing a big role. Nationalism is a pretty strong force these days, so you can't just put several countries together and tell them they don't have to live together.

Also, having military control over each other would give people the feeling of being oppressed by foreigners, taking away their freedom to make their own choices.

Nope, the french part of the population would surrender as soon as you mention war

European Union already exists.

Well, they are there just to make sure that Germany doesnt invade anything again. And it doesn't help out the really bad countries too much.

Seems to be working fine with the EU so far, no?

Actually you can, the key is simply to point them at some other foreigners that everyone can hate equally. Hence why you have pan-European nationalists who think we should form one big Europe and show Johnny foreigner who's boss. Interestingly enough, you tend to find the biggest pan-European nationalist movements in the European border territories - Russia, Greece, Spain et al. So it could be as simple as creating a big European super-state (let's call it Oceania) and telling everyone it's those dirty Asians who are to blame for everything. We could even dedicate an hour every day to hating them.

Yes, and it'd all get along like a house of fire. Flames, people screaming etc.

Mixedpotatoes 说:
Should it be balkan or something?
Eastern Europeans often seem to have some trouble realizing that they are Eastern European. :???:

But so far the EU is compromised of countries that are independant for the most part. An actually enforced unified government would be an altogether different thing I|d wager.
There are enough sentiments against the way it is right now after all. You for one should know.

True, didn't think of that. So if one can create a unified state, and at the same time create a reasonable opponent outside for people to oppose, it could work.
