A Flemish writer who wrote the Flemish Lion about the battle of the golden spurs, in the foreword of his book he talks about the problems between the Flemish and the Walloons. During those days the French speaking Walloons politically and economically dominated the new nation Belgium. Laws where not official if they where not written in French, all verdicts where given in French, and it happened, that a Flemish man could be sentenced to death without ever having understood a single word during his entire trial. The officers in the army where French speaking and gave their order in French, ending with the French sentence: Et pour les Flamands, la même chose (and for the Flemish, the same thing)
Annyway, I think it's beautiful that this defender of the Flemish cause could find in his heart to call the Walloons "brothers" If he could here the Flemish whine today about the Walloons he'd turn in his grave.
