Favourite army builds?

What's your favourite army build/strategy?  My personal favourite is to just have a mix of cavalry units from all different factions, because then my army's fast on the world map.  When i start a battle, I move everyone to a hill, use my repeating rifle to thin their ranks a little, then I have everyone just dash around madly.  It's not sophisticated, but it works well enough.  The biggest advantage is the overworld map speed, and the biggest disadvantage is that sieging is really, really hard.

I use outlaws, bandits, renegades, deserters, thieves, and all the outcasts of the wastes. As long as they're NOT mounted, due to financial reasons, to keep a low profile, and to make ordering them around a little easier. In battle I just tell them to hide behind a hill or other obstacle until the enemy comes near, then everybody's ordered to charge - they're really just supposed to draw fire so I can run around and chop people up.

Depends on what kind of character I'm playing, since I like to roleplay a bit. I tend to use more foot troops than mounted and use companions as my cavalry, for the same reason as Shrugging Khan - lower wages. Although, with my Indian character, I go mounted all the way - even the first tier Comanche troops start on horseback, and they pack a lot of bang for your buck.

As for strategy, I hide my foot troops behind some terrain feature, if the enemy has cavalry, I order my mounted troops to spread out and charge and call them back before they get too close to enemy infantry - rinse and repeat as necessary. While they're distracting enemy cavalry, I ride in slow circles around a hilltop or peek my head above a hill with an accurate single-shot rifle to snipe at the enemy from a distance, and take cover to reload. Once they get close, I pull out my revolver, and charge along with the rest of my party.

I'm a bit of a classic... Primarily infantry. and I invest time and training to train my US recruits up to the Veteran Regulars. Once I'm all ready i just set them up in a line with a bit of space in between and watch those Apache horsemen drop like flies against my wall of deadly blue lead :D also my dude was a survivor of the Civil War on the Union side so it's all legit :P

Indian troops are by far the best fun. The battle cries alone make me prefer them to the honkies. Lucky that we don't have the battle-cry key like in the WB version or I would keep hitting it until it falls off.

What're honkies? Don't suppose that's a bizarre, off-the-wall derogatory term for whites, is it?

Like in most mods the best strategy here is to zerg rush with cavalry units. But hey, I'm not complaining about that. In fact it makes it more interesting, since cavalry units costs so much in this mod I usually have to kill most of them in a suicide mission before the end of the week or I'm stuck in debts again. So it makes the game more interesting, having a new more diverse army each week. I used to play by simply getting loads of infantry sargeants. And yes, it might be effective but it isn't as interesting since it takes so much time to get even 20 of them.
