As the Swadian crossbow archers are inferior to their Rhodok equivalent and the Nord archer is inferior to the Vaegirs (and lacking the upper levels) it will come to a duel between Vaegir, Rhodok and Khergit.
I prefer archers with bows in the field and crossbows in a siege defense.

I believe the top Nordic archer is "Nord Veteran Archer"

and i'm not sure thats how you spell rhodock or however it's spelled

One of the options is actually spelled right and even with the right words!

Oh, and Vaegir Marksman for me.

1 is written correctly, 2 contain just a small mistake in the faction name, and 2 are messed up.

Anyway, Rhodok Sharpshooters are my favorite, because I've read somewhere they're best archers on foot in the game.

Aren't they really better than the Vaegir "Sharpshooters"?

I like Rhodoks not because they're better than Vaegirs, they are about equal, but because they're tier 4 instead of tier 5 troops.  You can raise them from recruits in 3 or 4 days while Vaegirs take twice that long. That last tier is slow.

Top tier troops take a incredibly long time to get.

Example.

I trained up some Nords to veteran
so I had about 30 Nord veterans and about 8 Nord Huscarls after a long campaign of elimanating the Swadians and Rhodoks.

Phhhf, now for the time of killing words. A "archer" is somebody who hits stuff at a distance using the weapon bow. Using the word "archer" for "infantry using ranged weapons" is like using "blademaster" when the list includes 'axes', 'lances' and 'maces'.
Now, the Vaegir archers is the best ranged infantry. The Nords Veteran Archers is the worst.

kirigit all the way, they own all!

i've seen them ride around for hours killing nords of over 3 times there number

I generally hate ranged units overall. Maybe I'm so used to riding with only Khergites and owning infantry that I don't really see the value of it.

Archers are nothing but free kills. So easy to avoid them by using terrain and running them down with horses, and even in open plains you and your horse will survive long enough to crash into them by simply using a heavy charger/hunter and your shield. Once you are ontop of them they are virtually scattered and dead.

Why waste the time filling your lines with troops that move slow, get killed nearly instantly by cavalry, and lose line of sight 90% of the time in mountain/hill battlemaps?

Go all out cavalry or cavalry+infantry. Forget the archers ¬_¬

About two months ago I got a full party of Vaegir Marksmen (full being about 120) and we annihilated. I lost maybe one or two per big battle, but they still destroyed the enemy. The cavalry were sometimes a *****, but my troops usually took their horses down before they got close enough.

all kirigits are archers *idiots*

All kirgits can use bows (yes, even the lancers), that doesn't really qualify them as archers though.

When talking about archers we're talking about units that actually hit other troops and inflict damage. Watching the lancers and mounted archers all lined up shooting at incomming enemies is like watching the 14 year old class at summer camp trying out bows for the first time... arrows fly all over and hit at random ¬_¬

Still, I have never yet met an army with archers that I couldn't crunch under the hoofs of cavalry, vastly superiour numbers aside of course. Noone expects 20 cavalry to kill 180 enemies (unless you play on ez-mode anyways).

That said, I did try running a new game and doing a 50/50 infantry/archers Vaergir army. From a player perspective, sure, the archers can be quite efficient. Most infantry is nailed before they come within melee range, and when they get close you simply order your own infantry up in front of the archers. I keep infantry lined up behind archers and doubletap F6 to move infantry up front if infantry gets close. Cavalry gets handled by infantry since they have an engagement radius of about 10-15 paces around them, so they move in and kill anything nearby when on Hold this position orders.

So, summed up... bots vs players, the archers are crap... players vs bots, the archers put out some real damage. At least thats my experience (from using the Vaergir ones anyways). I don't find the Kirgit mounted archers too good. They are usually first to start dying in an engagement and I really hate losing troops (hence why I boost my Surgery skill early on as well).

I kind of eluded to this in another thread, but my favourite way of getting top-tier troops quickly and without paying or providing food for all slow training - join a battle with loads of top-tier prisoners - when you win, you can hire any of them you want - there are normally more than you need.  I am finding that I can rapidly build a good army this way.

I would be interested if anyone has an even quicker way!

I usually go for the Swadian Sharpshooters, but I haven't decided - I find you just need a large number of archers to pick of enough enemies before they pick yours off!  But then the archers are less use in an open battle...
