I've been using a huscarl's round shield, but when it's on your back it blocks a *lot* of your view.  It's hard to aim with a bow or to fight with a 1-h/2-h weapon.  There are slimmer shields out there, but I hate getting hit around the side when I'm blocking with my shield.  Thoughts?

Maybe you'd do better with a Reinforced Heavy Heater Shield? Just the Heavy Heater though, the Knightly Heater and and Horseman's Heater are smaller and the other Heaters are weaker. The Heavy Kite will also work though it has one less point of resistance.

Raising your Shield skill will also improve your coverage against projectiles (basically by making the shield a magnet to nearby projectiles) if you haven't done so already.

It does?  I must've spent too much time on other mods.  I loved the fur covered shield since it has such wide coverage.  Not really any good at combat so anything that blocks arrows would be nice.

Old Round Shields and all other round shields are the same "size" as the huscarl one, despite their models having quite different sizes. This "bug" also makes round shields way, way larger than they have any right to be, so they're the best "category" of shield.
The Old Round Shield is the fastest, lightest and also adds +4 to body armour (equal to chainmail mittens), thus making it the most cost-effective shield in the game. The Huscarl Shield barely has double the hitpoints.

Also, about the ranged combat, it was intended to go in 1st person mode, it helps not only wit the FOV, but with the long range "sniping".

In  module_items shields have a stat called 'body armor' but in the game that stat appears as 'resistance'. It does not add to your body armor, it just means the shield can take a bigger hit before it starts taking damage and getting chopped up.
Huscarl's shields have only twice the hitpoints as Old Round shields but they have nearly 5 times the armor/resistance meaning they are a lot harder to chop up.

I prefer the reinforced steel shield, it's not so large that it would block the view, but it can also take quite a beating and is great in sieges.

Reinforced Steel Shield. With 10 points in shield, I've literally pushed enemies off walls.
It's like housecarl's shield without being excessively large.

But early game, the fur covered shield, long shields that mountain bandits carry, is what I use. It's big enough to block all projectiles and durable enough to last a battle. It's not so good in sieges because it has resistance of 1 (Crossbows eat through it really quick).

No no, this is the single player section.

I used to have a heater shield for the longest time. Majority of the game in fact. See, I would use it in sieges, and by the time I got onto the walls, the shield would eventually break and I could switch to 2h. Good way to keep the proficiency balanced.
Nowadays I use a thick huscarls round shield:
  1) To show off my wealth and power,
  2) Because it's such an unbreakable shield,
  3) Because I wanted to look like my troops, and lastly
  4) My coat of arms looks so friggon good on it.
Only downside is that I don't use two handed as much. I do sometimes though, if there's no archers nearby.

I've never seen a downside to using 1h/2h sword with a shield, especially in sieges. Usually i put my shield back once it's not needed and recoup that juicy 35% speed penalty.
In battles, if I'm on horseback I never usually use a shield at all. As long as you ride perpendicular to a group of archers you dodge 99% their shots.

I've only ever seen a Reinforced Huscarl's Round Shield break once.  I was defending against a siege and I decided that I'd lost and needed to go back a day to prepare better, but you can't just exit the battle.  So, I ordered my men to fight without me until I was the last defender in the castle.  My battle-sizer is at a 150, so I guess I was going up against 149 enemies.  I had a 5 Shield skill, as soon as the battle started everyone with a missile weapon fired at me, and my shield kept them back for several seconds.  I love the Huscarl's shield.  It's just that when I put it on my back, I can't see around it.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.  I think I'll try a steel shield.  I think they have better staying power.  I only decided to use the huscarl's shield because they're bigger which means they give better coverage, but it turns out that's also a problem.

Knightly heather shield.

Anything that's round hampers your view waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much when you fight. I am also riding my horse more often than not, and I like the look of the smaller shield

Human shields are great.  I use them when I'm taking my own good time loading up my siege crossbows and about to shoot all 90 bolts.  When they break, you run up behind another one....

I prefer the Heavy Round Shield, simply because it looks cool (especially with the right banner) and can take a fair amount of hits too.

In all honesty, the Huscarl Round Shield is the best, it puts up good resistance and is worth giving it a try, though in riding it might not be the best choice.
