Faradon makes good use of a large texture which features a good metal texture. The thing with the metal texture is that he shades in places where it would be necessary such as were corners and small crevaces exist because thats where dirt and stuff collects and dirties up with metal. Take a look at this for instance.

The helmet has a nice metal to it. But you see the shadow that exists between the hat and rim? there is a dark edge around the rim as well as on the studs on the rim. Additionally, highlights are applied to places that are elevated such as the nasal guard and the edges of the metal sheets. Faradon is an expert at deception, as an expert texturer should be to fool the eyes into thinking something imaginary is real.

Making a metal texture isn't too hard and to hand make one isn't difficult, although it would take a lot of unnecessary time. Faradon most probably has a template metal texture that he hand made half the way, then applied a scratched up metal texture from online or he could have applied scratches. I don't know. This is from speculation, but my intentions in saying this is just to clear up some possibilities of a good metal texture

I´m actually doing all my metal parts from scratch (without using a pre made texture). And yes, I use metal picture/s as layer/s, but the effect is quite minimal (most of the time) and just adds the finishing, the main metal is made with the burn and dodge(?) tools. Easy but time consuming. (Dejawolf textures have heavily influenced me in creating my own style)
Indeed, highlighting the edges is very very important for metal and any other materials where it makes sense. For metal I find it´s good to first lighten the edge and then add some scratches to it so it looks more natural (take your time with it and make it detailed). Overdo some things!

You should always add some dirt/shadows where it would make sense.
And don´t forget: Take your time. You can spend minutes with the modelling of a model but hours with the texture.

And don´t forget that these are just tips, there are no rules, do the things like you want -until you got a product that pleases you

You shouldn´t call me an "expert". There are other ..far more experienced modders than me around

Edit: I want to do this detailed helmet next http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs32/f/2008/188/4/f/Viking_Helmet_by_bakabobo.jpg then I will do some suggested items again, ok?

Very good, very good. I wasn't too far off. I still need to practice this technique of making a good metal tex.
Usually I bucket fill a solid gray and filter a disgusting amount of black and white noise, then motion blur to blend pixels and make artificial scratches.
Its good for weaponry but natural scratches along horizontal lines to occur so I'm looking for newer techniques. This one didn't require any online pics and was compltly hand-made but I think that will change.

Good luck with that new helmet, that rust looks hard to emulate. But if you do get it, you'll definitely be an expert.

Go for it, mate. I'd suggest doing anything you want to do prior to taking requests. That's a cool helmet.

Nice work Faradon. But i'll criticize it too

About mail coifs/aventails - your mail rings lacks rivets, and coifs lack front neck protection.

You know that the mail can be fastend from inside the helmet, and some of the helmets is not ment to have front neck protection.

True. There can be small mistakes anyway, it´s not the end of the world for me if there are some small things wrong. But thanks for the critisicm anyway

These helmets and weapons have as good a texture as the natives weapons and armor, great work faradon.

Thank you for you kind words. I don´t know what to do this evening, maybe I´ll start the helmet or make some basic swords.

But now, it´s dentist time!
Ouch.

Hm.. Why are so many people afraid of dentists? What kind of dentists do they really have in other countries? Monsters with a siezure everytime they are supposed to drill in your tooth?

well, you have to do as you please, so good work, i think that this helm is quite interesting...

and if this evening you're goin to do some basic swords, why don't you do a gladius? i think that the existing models are quite lame, and you have the skills to make a perfect one!

and moreover, it'll form a good team with the kopis you already made...

Normally the dentist isn´t a ting to fear...but sadly I´ve always problems with the anesthetization...sometimes it´s not really working. It´s not like that my dentist is a ******, the denists in germany are actually pretty good. But I promise that I´ll stay brave. Haha.
