Oh no, I despise these popularity/celebrity culture threads that will eventually pop up in any community, but I guess it can be used for good, and I have to say that in the beta Crazy_Archer was for me the epitome of a character worth remembrance due to his special theme. These were the days when he still fought naked and with only a bow.
But yes, as above post touches upon most players from back then remember each other well and I guess that constitutes a kind of fame.

The Hoboknights, definitely. I haven't seen more than one or two of them lately but back in the beta they were all over the damn place.
Spaz is hardcore. Can't remember if he's in ATS or not, but he's the best player I've seen. Noobs fall before him like wheat before the scythe.

I can't speak for the Euro guys but these are pretty famous in the US:
Wolfgang_Baron_von_Stadler - the original kickslash king, armed with a trusty bastard sword, habergeon, and great helm.
Styo - the original Warband alien. Beyond that, nobody knows.
Basu - founder of the first* US clan: KHAN. Nobody knows anything about him beyond this either.
*there were clans on the forums far before this, but I never saw any of them ingame (and I played quite a bit). AFAIK Basu had the first clan in the US with an active member.
Gabeed, Scipio, and the other Hoboknights - classic beta stuff
Kabookie - the original guy who rode around and was always the last one to die, holding up games. Thus the phrase, "stop being a kabookie."
olo - another Warband meme
Asha, Booya, and the 3rd guy I can't remember - original Warband beta trolls, they also ran around naked all the time.
I'll probably think of some more later.

I was from early beta, but nobody thinks I'm famous... 
I think I may have actually broken a record for the worst K/D ratio back in Beta in TDM. I got 3 kills and 50 Deaths... nobody remembers really bad players of course, only the really good ones
Anyways, on a more serious note, I do remember ghandi... that guy pissed me off, no matter how hard I tried I could never hit him, the bastard caused me to break my mouse in anger after like 20 minutes of failing.
