faction symbol

I was thinking when i saw some screenshots of Warband.
That big balloon over your heads mess up the screenshots beauty.

And as you see faction symbol on shields and costumes look faction origin is it needed ?

Do you need a balloon over you heads?

Also just wounder how your names show up in game play do you see friends? enemy name?

When I'm in the chaos of battle and I suddenly see a horse thundering towards me, I look for that ballon to see if I'm in danger or not. You don't have time to look at the shield (if the other guy even has a shield). The ballon is neccesary.

You can see your friends' names by looking at them when you are close to them (in the same way you would target a weapon on the ground in single player), but you cant see the names of the enemy.

Well if the friendly names showd up early would that do like 15-20metre?
But nothing show up fore enemy "hmm probably a foe?"

if i would see a horse thundering towards me i would take cover either way.

Is the Cavalry able to run through friends?

Cavalry will rear if it collides with friendly infantry, without knocking the friendly down if that's what you're asking.  I don't mind the faction symbols too much (although I wish they were toggleable) but it'd be nice if they turned off on the strict server since you can only "follow" your teammates after death anyway.  It gets annoying when the guy you're watching backs into a wall and all you can see is a screen-filling heraldry sphere.  I hear people complaining about that a lot.

Well thats good.
And about faction symbol yea it would be nice if they where toggleable, Size and blending optinon

I'd prefer them to be more visible to be honest. Whenever you're taking aim at someone any distance away it can be hard to determine if you're going to shoot an enemy or friend based on the tiny coloured pixel above their head.

Oh, man, I can't tell you how many times I've killed myself by putting an arrow through a friendly Vaegir horseman that looked just like a Khergit lancer!  I wouldn't mind them being more visible either; they don't bother me.  The only time when a quick-toggle key would come in handy is after I die.

in single player warband, they don't have anything at all above their heads (so far, i'm sure this will change). the green names worked well in single player for native. i give that a vote.

How about reticule colors?  Red for enemy, green for ally, and gray for neutral?

EDIT:  Nahhh, actually...that would be pretty ugly; and I'm pretty sure I'd hate it.  Stuff like that belongs in sci-fi games.

i dunno. i don't think that's such a bad idea. maybe instead of turning green, it just throws a warning up or plays a "don't shoot that dude!" .wav

There was a mod -- I think it was the minimalist HUD minimod -- that incorporated it.  I never tried it, though, so I don't have much of a feel for it.

I think the only thing that should be done is an option to turn them off. It's really fine how it is right now, if you can't tell by shield colors or enemy shield colors you deserve to hit the teammate.

1: Not everyone use shields.

2: Not everyone use Armour.

3: Many weapons look quite similar on long distance.. Like the Khergit "sword" (forgot what its called) and the normal sword.

That little, insignificant piece of artwork that hover above my friendlies heads are very important. At least for me.

Sure enough, I'm not a veteran, I'm sure some of you guys out there can spot any type of weapon at a mile away, memorize what type of weapon every faction have, and then place a bolt or arrow in the head of that guy.

4: All factions have javelins. So, if you see a naked guy without armour wielding javelins... Do you shoot? Or do you wait for the Javeliner to make the first move, because, if you do, you're rather dead... On short range of course. There are more weapons that are pretty impossible to separate visually unless you are standing right next to the guy.

Pretty much all of the polearms, apart from that Ashwood Pike (or whatever its called), Champion Lance and Glaive and other "knife on a stick" weapons, look just the same...

5: Don't remove the team tag. If anything, make it more visible...

I was Nord defending a castle in a siege, I saw this guy standing on the wall looking at me. I zoomed in on him, he had nothing above his head, only clear sky with clouds above his head. So I took a shot, and of course it was a nord.

The nord tag is white (with some light blue I think), a thin cloud is white, with some light blue... And yes, there was a cloud there, I didn't mistake the tag for a cloud, I simply didn't see the tag because of the cloud.

i can understand your frustration stygN. i agree that something should be done to help with friendly fire. i like the mirror damage, though. makes you really think twice before shooting :]

Hmm i am thinking if faction symbol was off and friendly fire is normal
people would work more to distinguish them self. You would survive more if you got a big yellow shield showing faction!

To run around whit no armor would put you in a bigger danger
And instead have cheap tunics like the tournaments armour will be better...?

Some of the factions do look identical, and not everyone wants or needs a shield.

Maybe their should be some more differentiation to make a toggleable option, an option. I think almost all the armours are different and when they are not they tend to be in the colour of the faction, most important would be naked people as they are identical. Maybe they should have faction inspired underwear.

However I want the faction symbol to be replaced with a green name of the player like in origional M&B. It performs the same important job as the faction indicator but also lets you know the name of someone so when you see cav coming up behind him you can read his name and warn him etc. Unless they increased the range of the current name coming up system, that would be good, but as good?

Not when you're far enough away you need to use zoom just to make sure you aren't in fact aiming at a bush they're not.

I don't mind it while playing, but only when spectating in the strict settings server. Having a giant spot on your screen is quite annoying to spectate through.
