Faction Guide

I've been playing this mod quite some time now, and I really like it. But since there are so many factions, it's hard to get a hang of them all and what they are all about. This is quite a hassle for a new player to deal with and I bet there a players who get discouraged by the fact that there are so many factions and virtually no information about them. I find it strange that there is no description of the different factions, and their units. (if there is one, I missed it) This mod would benefit from a guide like that, and the purpose of this thread is to create one.

I could go ahead and give my take on the different factions, but it would probably be better if someone who has been here since the birth of the mod did it. Maybe even Ruthven, although he probably has better things to do. (Who doesn't? :D)

I don't have anything better to do, tbh.

I wrote a brief description for the first five factions, so when I get home from school I'll find them and write up the rest.

Troop descriptions will take a long time, too, but I guess I could start on that.

Maybe even just troop trees with say Thrall (light infantry) so just a tiny bit of info about them in brackets.

But half the fun is figuring that stuff out...:(

Except when you have to upgrade (unpronounceable troop type name) to a choice of (2 more unpronounceable troop type names), and have no idea what the 1st type was, let alone what the upgraded versions are.  For some reason, I can never find my cheat sheet when I'm in this position.

I suppose this goes back to the way Native is set up, but at least there you had a general idea what you had and what you were getting because their names were pretty descriptive.  If there was a way to show the weapons of both current and upgraded types, as well as the before and after weekly costs, it would be a big help to us illiterate Viking warlords :).

so on the ROY discussion page there are troop trees, with translations but did some kind of faction description ever get made?

After playing for about an hour, here's what I think:

The green people (centered on Skydda) have the best archers. Once you figure out which troop line leads to the archers, the words look somewhat similar to "bowman" or something.

The orange people (Heithr clan) have the best melee guys, Bersikers.

With an army composed solely of the above two troop types, plus companions, I can basically win every field battle, with the battle size set to 200 or less. The archers shoot the enemy to pieces, the Bersikers throw axes to finish off a fourth of the enemy, then the last fourth of the enemy gets totally destroyed in melee. If the terrain is no good, at least I can go in with the Bersikers and do things the old-fashioned way.

Wrong. At least, it should be wrong.

Navy blue faction: Best balanced archers. Pretty close to best archers, but have higher melee skill and better armor than other archers
Green faction: Second best infantry, the Kununglegur Vorthur.
Player faction: Best infantry unit, the Berserker. Requires Warrior Hall to train.
Yellow faction: Solid infantry, no archers. Being able to overwhelm enemy infantry helps a lot, and no archers is a small price to pay.
Red faction: Good balance of every troop
Pink: Dedicated swordsman line, meaning all shields for higher tier units.
Brown: Good mix of infantry, and dedicated spearmen.
Orange: Throwing axes and very skilled infantry, few shields
Blue: Good infantry, good archers, good javelineers
Purple: Javelins galore, very fast moving, but bad armor and few shields

I mainly just did the following:
- Got a fully-upgraded soldier of each faction's units (except the player faction)
- Compared experience level, stats, skills and proficiencies

In general, it seemed like the highest-levelled troops also had the best stats, skills and proficiencies, although in some cases, the skills and proficiencies were equalled by lower-levelled troops (but not the stats).

I didn't really check their equipment except by looking at the troops in battle, and I didn't look at the source code either. I also didn't wait around to build an Armory or anything for the player faction villages.

For some reason I lost the information on most of the player troops, apparently. I swear I updated their inventories, but I have spearmen with bows and seaxes etc.

ssf, take a look at Ulfr clan's Bowmen, they have better armor and stats for a bowman than the green dudes last I checked.

The green dudes are supposed to have the best archers, right? Since their melee sucks...

Valdyr clan (green ones) have the best factional infantry unit in the game, and decent archers. Ulfr clan archers are better, IIRC, but the Serthrs navy blue) have the best overall archers.

Apparently I remembered the stats incorrectly. On stats alone, ssfsx17 was right.    I think my memory may have been affected by Ulfr's archers being much easier to train than Valdyr and their heavier armor helping in archery exchanges longer.. or I just like the color blue. Valdyr are also crazy expensive

Is it a matter of equipment that put Serther over?

Valdyr (green) Forvigismathur Langbogimand: Powerdraw 5 archery 255, Weekly cost: 36

Ulfr(blue) Bojemand: Powerdraw 5 , archery 238, Weekly cost 20

Serthr(navy blue) Scytie Cempa: Powerdraw 5 archery 170, Weekly cost 18

Ruthven, I havn't had enough time to build enough buildings to get my army better supplied in my current campaign. Does the player kingdom get access to decent bowmen with upgrades? I've noticed in the current version once we become our own kingdom we can no longer recruit faction-specific units from other kingdoms , like Bojemand.

Man that's messed up, my python code says archery 150 for Forvigismaður Langbogimand, yet in-game it's still around 250.

I'll have t give the Serthr archers a boost then. Then again, there isn't that big a difference, Serthr archers cost less and you can get them in three upgrades. Hrmm...
