Face enemy direction

...until this mess is fixed hopefully by TW or failing that, modders. With new patch today showing no changes we will just have to put up with it for now I guess,

Trouble is not everyone is willing to use mods. Can only speak for myself, and I bought the game to play it as it was made. I do not wish to have to update mods everytime I launch the game to continue.
So it's important for me that the controls are sufficient in the base game. And I am sure I am not alone in that.
Many people are not confident enough to mess with things like mods :???:

The worst part is, the controls were good before and now they are awful to command your troops, really hoped this patch would bring something to improve on this..

Yeah that's fair. I only use a couple of small ones for things that are place holders for things that are broken or unfinished but can totally understand that people don't want to and more importantly, shouldn't have to.

I've Generally been happy with early access and they pace of development. I mean it was all going in the right direction but the new command system is really taking the fun out the game for me. I am beginning to feel reluctant to play, but I'm in lockdown so have been persisting a bit. Hopefully this is a temporary mess and we get the option of the old one back soon. But with 2 patches in the last 2-3 weeks, we will probably be stuck with this for a while now.

The old system will not come back but the devs already said they will add quick actions to F4-F10. I hoped they will add it with 1.5.7 but no luck, I guess we need to wait for 1.5.8 or beyond.

Just wait for the modders. Thanks to devs for the base game and all but other than that they totally suck. I gave up any expectations I had about the game. Idk who comes up with those stupid ideas in this company but I don't care. You shouldn't either. Without mods and the community this game is nothing but garbage. Sooner or later, I'm pretty sure some talented modder will fix the command system issues and make it even better.

Thanks for the info. quick actions sound promising. see what we get I guess.

Hopefully they also fix the toggle off the 'Move to' command as well so it doesn't stay on it after giving an order

In theory - quick actions might be potentially better then the original system; as long as we can all retrain our muscle memory to the new keys.

Yeah I agree. I am not against a new system in principle but it needs to be fit for purpose and better than what it replaces. The current state of the new system is neither of these however.

As you say with quick actions things could be even better than the old system in which case muscle memory will soon adapt.

I just hope the changes come in the next patch as the current state is really frustrating. TBH I'm surprised they released it into the game in this state. I understand things need tested but jeez, it's totally woeful.

Sorry been a long week. But yes I agree.

Currently there are so many problems with the current system. But I think they specifically dropped it to just 3 keys for a design reason and are making us put up with it. *Cough* consoles. There are plenty of well thought out explanations in here and arguments as to why that is stupid but as said it's been a few updates and no change back. (EDIT: Ok now they did an update see below)

Recent patch had this in the description:

Let me know how you get on.

(Pinged incase nobody is following thread anymore)

Does this fix the problems? What do you think of the new system? Any new bugs? Lets keep this conversation going

@UK-Tranquillity @mexxico
It improves the command menu a lot (in a problem TW themselves created, the old one was very good and functional already) but F7, F8 and F9 are unnecessary and shouldn't be there.

Face direction got a shortcut that is longer to reach for the fingers than F3 > F1 but the main problem of it still remains, it should have it's function separated from the face enemy command and both placed on F3 > F1 / F3 > F2 if TW is insisting in keeping this structure of commands.

Two formation commands on F8 and F9 (that you can't change to your favorite ones even) when you already have them much closer to your hand on F2 > all formations? this is also completely unnecessary, it would be far better if they added a choose width and chose height for formations in F8 and F9, those would be useful commands that vanished instead of duplicates.

Another thing, before their revamp on the commands you could move the mouse and see on the markers where your formation would be facing before commanding them to face it so you could tailor it exactly how you wanted to flank or cover a narrow pass for example, right now it's all dependent on where your character is facing and this is really really bad if you want to command quickly while in the middle of action.

I want the quick and intuitive commands back instead of having to babysit my troops lol

vonbalt has summed it up well. I have posted directly on the hotfix thread basically underlining what Incanuth said:

The old "face enemy / face direction" commands from the original setup were much better. They were in a more useable position (f2 menu) and having them in that same menu on separate buttons was more efficient. The old behavior of the command allowing you to see where the line was facing before confirming the order was also better. The original command layout in general was perfectly functional - I hope you guys are planning on allowing it as an option. The new layouts from recent patches are clunky and inefficient, thought it's nice to see "hold fire / fire at will" back on f4. Why on earth would you put a command as important as "face direction" on f7?

Yes this is good feedback hopefully it gets to the devs. I really don't agree with any of the hotkey changes. Prefer the old bar setup and hotkeys.
It just worked.

All it needed was a few more additions and it was perfect.

As many others have commented, there was no need to change the classic arrangement at all. In my eyes and as a basic panel of orders the only thing that needs that panel (prior to the radial transition) is a button to change the use of weapons and give the order face direction a reshaped more intuitive for the player. Independently of that, by means of another interface (perhaps radial), orders could be incorporated to carry out more complex tactics.

That would be ideal for me. Sorry for the wild spam here ? ? .

Not at all. This is the sort of constructive feedback that we should be providing.

I've have only had time to try it out in one battle and was happy enough with it. I mainly use Move, Follow, Hold fire, Loose, Shieldwall, delegate and transfer. Generally the way I was playing before is for the most part restored but here's my thoughts for things that could use some tweaking

I am probably not going to use the shortcut to shield wall as 'F2 F2' is faster than F8 when my fingers have already been giving other orders.
F5 being mount/dismount isnt great as it's right in the middle of commands i use and i dont want to accidentally press it for sure....
Toggle off movement command is still a pain with an esc press needed to go back to controlling character. - I am not 100% how this was during the old bar and it is maybe just noticed now as I was over the place with the radial system. in any case it would be nice to have an option to change this.
Using transfer will still require the going into the F3 menu but 90% of time if i use this it will be at the start of battle anyway (an exception to this will be when reinforcements spawn in there original group so maybe that needs looked at anyway?
I dont use face enemy so cant comment

All in all I was very happy to see them in hotfix as we have a viable system again. Hopefully they tweak it a bit and we can also get full customisation at somepoint.
