Seems like the US is going through a lot of **** right now.

Yup, that's like 30 minutes from where I live. My grandparents live in West, their house is pretty ****ed up but they made it alright. They had to evacuate though, not sure where they are now.

Not a big surprise when your whole country is ****.
**** off.

Which presumably refers to either **** or cussing in general.
Also that sucks. Seems bloody moronic to build a fertilizer plant so close to the rest of town (or vice versa)

Glad your grand-folks are alright. =]

This.

Also, I'm not one of those conspiracy theorist nutcases, but I can't help but notice that is one hell of a coincidence: this explosion coming so soon after the Boston Marathon bombs. Certainly makes you wonder.

Clearly it's Al-Qaeda striking where it hurts the most - the ****. Do you want to feel safe again?

Not really. It's ammonium nitrate. That stuff blows up all the time.

Ammonium nitrate decomposes into the gases nitrous oxide and water vapor when heated (non-explosive reaction); however, ammonium nitrate can be induced to decompose explosively by detonation. Large stockpiles of the material can be a major fire risk due to their supporting oxidation, and may also detonate, as happened in the Texas City disaster of 1947, which led to major changes in the regulations for storage and handling.

Yeah, my family owns a plant nursery (interestingly enough in West Texas; not West, Texas) and we're not allowed to sell the stuff to non-agricultural consumers since the Oklahoma City bombings. In large amounts it is pretty destructive, but it requires a heat source to get it started I believe.

It was probably just an electrical fire or something like that, that happened to start in exactly the wrong place.

Well, the Haber process (is that still used? I think it is, it was in 1990 when I learnt it at least) was invented so it could be used in manufacturing more shells for wartime usage, I don't know why anyone would think its a friendly happy substance.

Because the Haber-Bosch process also produces ammonia fertilizer that helps feed two billion people.

Also helps people misunderstand the points of posts as well.

But it is, it is positively bursting with joy. Unfortunately we humans don't appreciate its exuberance.
