Experience for Captains

Can anyone tell me - does assigning a companion to a Captain slot in battles give them any stats bumps? Specifically, it seems to me that it might increase their Leadership, and possibly, Tactics.

I never delegate command in a battle in which I'm Army Leader. If there is a stat bump, am I preventing it by keeping all formations under my thumb, as long as I'm not wounded?

It doesn't do any of that as far as I know. If you want them to get those passive skills (and most) they need to lead a party.
Also, I'm not sure if party leaders under your control (IOW in an army with you) will gain tactics from battles, since AFAIK you gain tactics from damage done by all of the troops. I don't think delegating command changes this.
