EVGA GTX 560 Ti underclocking itself to 50 MHz

Like the title says, my card has started underclocking itself severely. I can't figure out why. I've made sure the nVidia control panel is set to prefer performance, and my clock target in PrecisionX is 900 MHz (as shown in the attached screenshot). Can anyone help me out? I've had it since April of last year, and the problems started within the last week or so.

To the latest stable version (301.42, I believe), yes.

Just did some playing around in MSI Afterburner and discovered that when I change the clock speed and hit Apply, it does go up to the desired speed. However, it only lasts a few seconds before it drops to exactly 405 MHz, and from there, a few seconds later, to 51 MHz.

Download GPU-Z, install it, hit log to file and try playing a HW-heavy game for a few minutes. Exit the game and look in that file. What are your clock speeds during playing?

Also, what about overheating? If your GPU reaches very high temperatures, it automatically underclocks itself to prevent damage. You might want to check the fans for dust.

What about performance? Do games run well/like usual?

PSU/GPU degradation could be an issue if either are old but that is probably not the case. The GPU may also not be getting enough power from the PSU if you have more things running than you should.

It's probably turning itself onto Desktop Graphics mode, as opposed to 2D graphics or 3D graphics mode. Reinstall your drivers from scratch.

So it seems to come and go. After posting this, it worked fine for a little while, then again it happened today. I did as Marcus said, logging as I tried to play Arma 2 briefly (I used MSI Afterburner to log instead of GPU-Z since it was already installed, but I can do it again with GPU-Z if required) and here are the results.

If it is only doing it when your not gaming ( at least that is all I can tell from the log from temps) then you probably just have a power saving feature on in your bios.

You should still just check your bios to see if you have any power saving options on. I can't remember if any would work on the GPU or not ( I know there are options for CPU that lower the mhz on it when idle).

As for possibility of not having enough power or something, I don't think that's an issue. I have a 750 watt PSU, which is more than my build needs.

In my opinion, PSU is not the problem (especially if you have 750W). If your PC didn't get enough power from it, then it would switch itself off. Do you have CPU with integrated graphics? Maybe you could try disabling it in BIOS completely. Also, as Kevlar said, check it for any other power saving options.

So, when running ArmA 2, what performance (FPS) did you have on what details? It seems like your card was in idle mode (my GTX 670 has 324MHz in idle), but somehow does not switch itself back to 3D mode when you run a game.

I have an Core i7 950, which doesn't have integrated graphics. You're probably right about the power save thingy, anyway.

When my card is functioning normally, I get about 40 FPS on Arma2 at near max graphics. When it's not, I get about 1-2 FPS.

So you had 1-2 FPS while you were playing ArmA 2 and using MSI Afterburner to log? Hm, looking at the log I can see very high GPU usage, fan speed also high, and the game is using quite alot of memory. Only the clock speed seems to be stuck.

Were you overclocking before the problems started? Or have you installed new drivers?

You could also try underclocking the GPU a bit, or leaving the clock speed and increasing voltage (that's just an idea, increasing voltage might be dangerous).

There's your problem. If the card is overclocked when you try and install the drivers, the drivers will fail. You need to reset it to default, install the latest driver, then overclock.

I've been using the latest beta drivers on my laptop card because the WHQL driver didn't work. Not that I'd miss the oppourtunity to squeeze more frames out of Skyrim with the beta drivers, but hey.

Try installing the 304.79 beta drivers, and the previous WHQL 296.10 if those don't work.
