Played 45 hours of this using an xbox 360 gamepad and trackIR to look around. Really relaxing and super cozy when it rains. Turn up that rain slider!
It is really relaxing, until it starts raining with thunder and lightning at 9pm on a deserted country road with no cars other than a white van that appears to be getting ever closer, then it becomes even more relaxing.

That white van followed me for the majority of that road, and then turned off at the last turning on the right. It was only at this point that the rain stopped and cars started appearing. Best creepiest 20 minute drive I've ever had.

So, I pretty much have got the hang of playing it with keyboard to steer and mouse to look. Up to about Level 6, about 3000km driven. Only takes me ~10 to 15 minutes to back most loads into the dock. Manage to get through about half my trips with zero damage or infractions and rarely have infractions. Still having problems with steering at higher speeds or in rain. Game seems to account for "slick" roads by making your steering sensitivity go up or something. Oh yeah, the Steering Sensitivity adjuster in Options DOES impact WASD steering, so by turning it to about 20% I can function. Still not ideal but functional.

Strangely addictive game given how "unpleasant" and tense it is.

Questions:

1. Are there any real diffferences between the truck models? Seems to me Majestic is easiest to steer: smooth and stable. Volvo also seems okay. DAF I'm not sure. Iveco sucks. Renault I don't think I've driven and Man very rare. I have yet to buy my first truck. I know the horse power probably matters a lot, but do the actual models differ?

2. What mods do you guys use? Apart from a "fixes" mod and maybe some of the "real logos, etc." mods I'm not seeing anything that catches my fancy.

3. Any mods that force "realistic" travel? What I mean is: if I'm still driving other owners' trucks, I can see jobs all over Europe. Lets say I just finished a run from Frankfurt to Nurnberg, and its Monday at 15:15. I select a job carrying ammo from Munchen to Linz and *poof* I'm magically IN Munchen to start my run at 15:15. This to me sort've spoils the realism. If I'm going to hop in a bus, train, etc. from Nurnberg to Munchen, the game should add some time and thus reduce my total time to finish the run.

When im playing i'll usually choose to take a job from the same place i just delivered to. I also don't use mods as nothing strikes my fancy at all.

Ivecos are the cheapest so give these to your hired drivers (what lorry they use is irrelevant to how fast they do the job)

Mercedes (or majestic as its called) have the best balance and are my preferred lorry to use as you can carry the speed through the corners better so your average speed is higher.

Volvo/Scania have the highest hp so can tow the biggest loads easier and traffic affects you less as it won't take an hour to get back to 60 like it would in the 320hp Iveco.

Ah cool, thanks.

Seems like you get a special deal on your "preferred" model or something?

I bought two Volvo FH for about 95K each and gave them to my two drivers, Steve and Chris. I was driving one of them at first and souped it up a bit but then decided I want a better one so I'm driving for other owners for a while until I find a Mercedes dealer.

That base make Volvo was actually cheaper than some of the base makes of other models (DAF, and Renault were the ones I had found when I shopped). So I'm guessing you get some kind of discount on your preferred model.

Did a bit of playing with Sequential transmission using Left Mouse to upshift and right mouse to downshift. Supposedly you get better speed and fuel efficiency but after 15 hours of playing on simple auto I think it will take me a while to adjust.

**** France, every time I get my cargo up to over 120kph there's either a damn toll booth or a tight junction and I have to stop

Add: And **** GB too on  the same note, every 500m there's a speed-cam and everyone insists on driving on the wrong side of the road

Finally feel like I can function pretty well and even manage to hit high speeds on motorways.

1. My setup is keyboard for steering, mouse for look only.

2. I adjust the Steering sensitivity up and down as I play.

(a) If I am in a truck with no trailer I'll adjust it about 20% (I count "zero" as all the way to the left, and 100 as all way to right). This gives me enough responsiveness in the A and D keys to make somewhat quick turns.

(b) If I have a trailer but I'm not on or nearing getting on a main highway (higher speed road) I'll also put it at about 20%. Maybe 15% for departure after hooking up, 25% for arrival and getting ready to finagle it into the dock. Maybe even go up to 30% for parking the trailer at the dock, but not for roads where speed is 30km or faster.

(c) For highways and especially motorways (speeds up to 110 km/h) I adjust it as close to zero as I can get. This allows me to actually function at high speed, pass other rigs with a close shoulder, etc. However, at high speed with sensitivity too high, you'll fishtail and bounce off everything.

3. I initially played it with simple auto transmission, but now I'm playing sequential and I use Mouse left for ups shift and mouse right for down shift. Reverse is on bottom, then up one is neutral, then up one is 1st and so on. Mouse movement is look. W accelerator, S brake.

Other than that I pretty much play with stock settings.

At first driving with keyboard to steer seemed impossible, but I kept fiddling and that is what I came up with. I can generally manage a ~450km trip and suffer negligible damage to my cargo and truck.

Installed the mp mod. Played a bit' on the US server. Meh, don't really see the point, but wow it is well done. Maybe more fun on Euro server with more folks.

Have discovered the SCS ETS2 forums. Nice community. Lots of mods for this game. My current loadout:

Say, I've uploaded quite a few pics from this game to greywool. Is there anyway to see the stuff I've uploaded and/or delete some of it?

Actually though, that particular permutation crashes. The MHA map requires the Go East DLC which I don't have yet. I've subsequently installed the "Truck Sim 5.0 Map" which is pretty freakin' amazing. Includes lots more cities in British Isles, Germany, low countries, etc., but also includes a fully fleshed out France, Spain, Italy, some in North Africa and Egypt, Greece, etc. !
