| The regiment was sent to Egypt in 1801, capturing Fort Marabout at the entrance to Alexandria harbour. This won it a sphinx on its badge and the unique battle honour ‘Marabout’. It then returned to Gibraltar in 1802, where it was the only unit to remain loyal during a mutiny there that year. 2nd Battalion was disbanded later in 1802, but the regiment remained in Gibraltar until 1805. In 1807 the regiment sailed for the West Indies for two years, during which it also sent a detachment on the abortive expedition to capture the Spanish territories at Buenos Aires (1807). The regiment saw no service in the Peninsula, instead spending the last five years of the Napoleonic Wars (1803-15) fighting in Swedish Pomerania (on what is now the Baltic coast of Germany and Poland), northern Germany and the Netherlands. As part of the 4th Division it held Wellington’s right flank at Waterloo (1815), seeing no action during the battle but capturing Cambrai in its aftermath. It then joined the Army of Occupation in France for a year, before returning to Britain. | We are a relaxed and engaging regiment that wishes everyone to feel "at home" and happy with their regiment. We utilize minimal discipline techniques as we should have this as a hobby not as life. |
