It was probably a welcome mistake, because you technically can use any bow that you can draw properly even on horseback; the Japanese had exceptionally long bows that were longer than English longbows, and they used them on horseback with ease.
Pretty sure Japanese mounted archers used bows that are shorter on their bottom half, such that they didn't hit the horse.
