Equipment for companions

What does everyone like to give their companions to use?

I've been trying some different combos but I am looking for ideas for what equipment to give my companions that doesn't require massive micro.

Fighters I equip with heavy morning stars, huscarl shields, and siege crossbows.

Supports I equip with balanced elite scimitars or balanced long arming swords, huscarl shields, and light crossbows.

I put all of them on armored horses.

NPCs will use their crossbows from horseback even if they don't have any points in horse archery and can't hit anything. That's why I give the fighters siege crossbows...so they won't use them unless they are in a siege (or get unhorsed I guess). Support NPCs I'd rather have riding around doing nothing rather than getting clobbered in the thick of the fighting (I also label them as archers).

A bit similair to the guy above, I don't exactly have support companions. I do surgery and looting myself since I know I should be alive at the end of every battle.

Each companion rides an armored horse, usually a heavy or spirited charger. Then me and all the companions use a nice 1-h sword, schimiter or cleaver. Then heraldric armor with tabard (just looks nice). A shield depending on faction. Then a siege crossbow.

Well, I got 3 heavy plated cavalry; 2 with one handers and 1 with a lance. All 3 ride spirited chargers. One has siege crossbow.
I also got 2 horse archers, both on hunters. They also have SoWs, although sometimes I like to take them away so they concentrate on archery.
For light cavalry, I got Nizar who is my anti-routing guy on champion courser. Can't outrun 54 speed. He sports elite scimitar and 2 shields.

Don't want to micro?  Try balanced two handed sabres (there are two kinds, get the thin bladed ones - they're more expensive, but clearly superior).  Also give them 2x steel bolts + siege Xbows.  They won't try to fire the Xbows on the horses, but during sieges, they will use them quite well.  Since they don't have shields, you'll want them to be firing during sieges...  but on the field those huge sabres have great speed, range, and damage whether on the ground or horseback - and you don't need to worry about the AI thrusting ineffectively or getting stuck up close with a polearm.  You also barely need any shield skill or very much agility, so you're free to pump power strike + ironskins...  still, it's worth getting 12 agility for 4 riding, a bit of weaponmaster, perhaps some athletics.

Other good options are shield + morningstar, Great Bardiche (the 116 2h type), two handed sarranid maces, swords of war, 2h military cleavers, long arming swords, and even the spiked staff + shield.

I highly recommend against long lances.  You can probably get by with light lances or double sided lances, but you said you don't like micromanaging - and you need to micromanage these to get the most from them.  I also highly recommend against horse archery of any kind and throwing weapons - these options cost a lot of skill points and have very little value to them... you'd rather have your companions riding around thrashing in melee.  I've also had pretty great results using companions as specialized ground archers.  They are particularly good with masterwork siege crossbows as when they get up to the higher proficiencies, they'll launch bolts straight through weaker shields.  There's obviously something to be said for a companion with 300 archery and 10 powerdraw.  They can rack up an unreal amount of kills rather fast.  Generally my rule for ground-companions is balanced military pick and heavy board shield + xbow OR bow + 2x arrows + great long bardiche.

I don't separate my companions into support and combat, they all fight and they all have 1-3 party skills they specialize in. They all get an armored horse, a shield, a heavy military hammer (for prisoners), and unlike the other posters I actually like my companions to shoot crossbows from horseback, so they get light crossbows (masterwork when I can find them) and steel bolts. I'll armor them in sea raider byrnies until I'm rich enough to start buying them high quality armor, I tend to vary what I give them in each game but they'll all be dressed the same.

I tend to have a couple of infantry companions, jarids x 2, shield and a 1-hander.
A couple of horse archers, strong bow, bodkin or khergit arrows x 2 and either bastard sword or morning star, and then I have 3-4 support characters who are given crossbows, steel bolts, shield and a good 1 hander.
I favour the long arming sword when I can find them, but otherwise whatever I can find for free or cheap without being chipped or rusty.
In terms of armour the best I can find for free initially but once my trading empire gets going I look to buy suits of armour in the 5-6k denar range so Cuir Bolli or Banded Armour usually, gloves, boots and helmets follow the same pattern, free initially

:o how do you get these so called "champion horses" i have never seen one.

Given that heavy cavalry > all in this game, I tend to set them up as heavy cavalry, with a few exceptions.

Deshavi: Foot archer.
Bunduk: Crossbowman.
Klethi: Infantry with throwing weapons - really useful when assaulting bandit lairs, otherwise sort of forgettable.

Everyone else gets a warhorse, heavy armour, good weapons and shields. Some of them get lances (Nizar in particular is pretty handy with one), others get 2h weapons. If I have the money I try to get them armour that fits their background; Matheld, for instance, is trussed up as a proper Huscarl (except on horseback).

Why do some people label some of the companions as support or similar? Maybe to make sure they do not get knocked out and lose their surgery and/or wound treatment effect?

I always give them the best armor possible, heavy charger and arm them with long awl pikes(best balance of damage/reach/speed imo, for my char I prefer heavy lance for reach), Some sort of 2h usually a sword of war or morning star and a shield, usually steel because apart from being tough it looks good with plate.

At first they will die often until I manage to equip them properly and they gain exp, but after a while they will be like Swad Knights on steroids(my attack force is usually knights only) and they help ALOT in the initial charge, yes in earlier versions they used to get stuck and try to poke foes at close range, but I didn't see that very often in the last few patches.

Lately I started giving them 1h swords(if they don't have a morning star which is both 1h and 2h) so they could use the shield while on foot for sieges and bandit camps and avoid getting owned by archers. But I think they never use the 2h now, not sure how their weapon choice works but I always make sure their 2h proficiency is better than the 1h. Maybe someone can shed some light on this?

So to answer the OP, since my army is usually Swadian Knights only, I find that an average length pole arm and powerful 2h works best, they couch for the charge with the knights and keep fighting with the 2h. For sieges I keep them the same since giving them a bow/crossbow will leave them exposed to enemy fire and I want them to be the first up the ladder as a spearhead so they break through as fast as possible to let the rest in the castle.

As in vanila MB best HAs you can get are your companions. Armored horse, (strong) war bow, khergit arrows x 3. I take most (especially healing/patfinding) party skills myself, leader bonus is quite handy

I make Deshavi, Baeshtur, and Nazir into Horse Archers with Shield and Lances stuck on to a Heavy Charger. They use their native Khergit and Sarranid armors.

Aylen I make into a beast of a knight, Vaegir style since he is from there. So heavy armor, knight shield, 1-handed Sword and he rocks out a Seige X-Bow.

Firents I turn into a Berzerker, so he always gets some gawdy 2-Hander with Thrown skill.  Matheld is similar except she gets an Axe and Shield with Thrown, she becomes a Huscarl basically. These are my Infantry commanders.

I have only used Klethi once and I put her into the Firents/Mathled mold of fighter using thrown and off of a horse.

Jeremus, Bunduk, Lezalit, Artimer are all made into X-Bow men in the Rhodok style. Heavy shield, Seige X-bow and then 1-handed Mace, Pick, Axe, whatever. These guys clean up with their shots.

Um, never really used Marnid, that old lady (also an M name?) or Ymira. Rolf and Borcha I also ignore. I suppose I would mold Marnid into a Knight Alayen style. Ymira could replace Mathled or be a knight too. Borcha would replace Deshavi. Rolf, well I just hate him.

My companions are quite the force on the battle field now that they have good skills, weapons and armor. They probably account for 33-50% of my parties kills to be honest. Well worth developing them all.

Alayen, Firentis, Borcha, Lezalit are my Knights, plate armor, winged helm (so I know who is who ;)  ), the 100-27-333 round shield, the balanced long arming sword and a good sturdy armored horse, like the Steppe charger for example.
Ymira and Jeremus are my redundant medics, ymira can make a good 'Chamberlain' in my home town, Baheshtur is my finest horse archer (because of his starting bow skills), Rolf is very good with his heavy jarids, then a masterwork 49c 2H sabre. Ymira and Jeremus are sporting also the best x-bow they can use (low STR!) and they are listed as archers and last on the list. I, myself am a master Horse Archer, 10 in HA, PD, PS, 250 prof. in 1h/2h and 370 in bows. My alternative weapons are: balanced long arming sword (my favorite), 49c 2H sabre (hugely effective when unhorsed/ambushed and as lately the balanced long awlpike, trying to up my poleaxe proficiency to boos my performance in those village elder train-us quests. It's really humiliating to be banged up by a couple stark naked pole-wielding dumb peasants. Me, the 40+ lvl knight of doom, the scourge of Calradia, the vanquisher of the once glorious Swadian and Rhodok kingdoms...runiing like a girlie from a bunch of illiterate men of no value? C'mon :D
