Ok so here is the scenario,

I butscrew am an elementary school English teacher in Seto, Japan (near Nagoya). Anyway this Monday I have 4 classes to teach all grade 5 and 6 at Shimoshinano Shogakou. Instead of using the Eigo Note textbook system we have been using and will be compulsory from next year the teachers want me to just play games with the students. Games that are English and fun for kids aged 10- 11.

Now while I can think of dozens of games we could play I am interested to hear what English games are played in classes in other parts of the world. Considering there is a lot of students on this forum and people whose first language is not English I would like to hear what games you played in class at school when learning English.

We played the listen to your teacher drone on and on about literature game. Really quite fun.

Interesting concept though.

Try some spelling bees, and hangman and stuff.

Google would be a good place, i was born and raised in sheffield england and a rough area at that...we used to play hangman alot, with real people.

Well we are talking about kids with very little English skill. Japan is behind all developed countries when it comes to English. Even China is miles ahead of Japan on English study.

20 Questions sounds like it would be a good game for that.

We used to watch this in class. It's not a game, but I had to post it now that you've reminded me of it. That was in the 5th grade, mind you. Now we watch other types of films, like f. ex. Hannibal Rising.

Huh. I don't remember any of my English teachers playing any games with us. Actually, I think the reason why I'm quite good in English is because I grew up in a house full of books.

I grew up in a house made of bricks. Much stronger support againest storms then books I think. I did read your sentence and understood it I am just joking around.

I am thinking celebrity heads is always popular, but the problem is that it would require too much Japanese for the kids to actually enjoy it. Hangman unforunately is impossible as Japanese kids don't learn how to write or spell until Junior High (12 years of age). Before then its all verbal and listening.

You're joking.

Once I've read the first post of a thread, I rarely read the rest of them.

You could play Pictionary then (presuming Japanese kids learn to draw before the age of 12...) or get them to Mime out film titles or sentences or whatnot. Then there's always Chinese (ha) whispers.

Hide the Sausage: Most educational game ever.

I'd like to keep my job.

On the kids not learning how to read or write English before 12 years of age. No I am not joking like I said, Japan is years behind everyone else in Asia, Europe and even Africa when it comes to English study.

Thanks for the link sushiman70.

Pictionary is a great game, hadn't thought of that one though because its more of a younger year level that actually enjoy it, Grades 1-4 love it, but my experience showed me (its only 2 years but its enough) that the older kids don't like it so much, which sucks when you can't think of anything fun. Some of the kids are actually so good at drawing that with a single stroke the nature of the thing is revealed. I am serious there is a lot of kids especially girls who are at the level of being able to draw manga characters exactly like the books.
