Engineering doesn't do anything...

I just got the engineer in my party, he has 4 skill points. I go to my village and ask him to build something, and he says it'll take between 40-70 days. Now that didn't seem to be much of an improvment at all, so I asked one of my friends, he has no engineering skill, and most structures he says from memory take 30-60 days. So... either nothing has improved or it's gotten worse, either way engineering is practically useless if 4 skill points are the same as sleeping a night or two <_<

I'm not sure if there was any change to this in warband ( not sure whether you're playing WB in the first place either) but Engineering always did have effect with me. It drastically shortened the time needed to build ladders and towers, also shortening time (and money?) needed to build buildings in villages, castles and towns.

I'm going to check my M&B native for any differences between not having the skill and having it but I'm sure there are many.

I'm playing warband, maybe I'll make a new character and have a look, but it doesn't seem to have really effected anything... I've played through about 40 days in around 6-8 hours. Playing another 15 or so hours to have a building built seems a bit excessive considering many games don't even last that long XD

Engineering shortens the time it takes to build seige equipment like the ladders and towers. And it does shorten the build time and cost, or at least mine did.

Also are you comparing the same building, probably a dumb question but it needs to be asked. Some are faster to build than others.

Ah warband. Well, don't know about that, but in M&B native a messenger post was 4000 denars and would take 43 days to build without any engineering but with 5 engineering it would be 3000 denar and 33 days. I therefore theorise that one point of engineering reduces the cost bij 200 and the time by 2 days.

In warband, with no engineer skill, it takes 90 hours to build a siege tower. With level 4 engineer skill, it takes 72 hours. So I guess 1 engineer point decreases build time by about 5%?

Engineering in M&B does work.  My guy has a 10 and ladders take 2 hour, seige towers 30 hrs, most improvements are 20 days, some 30 and they cost less.

okay so it just doesn't decrease it much... With 4 levels taking something that usually takes 80 days down to about 72... kinda lame. Also, how many people have 12-15 hours of time to wait for one building to finish construction XD

Doesn't anybody see this as being a bit extreme... With most games, you would be done and finished with the game before your first building had finished construction. Of course, Mount & Blade can go on forever, but the point still holds...

Most of your games last less than 80 days?  Are you joking!  I'm on day 460 and still loving it.

Since when did you have to wait the time literally?

Dude, you need to do some reading. Someone said that it takes 30 hours to build siege tower with 10 engineering, where it takes 90 without. What does that mean? It reduces it by 6 hours per engineering. Sorry if I come off harsh, but READ and THINK.

What I would suggest, is that in case you have a peace time on your hands or you have your castles far from the enemy or you don't have any castles, that you a) reduce the amount of men in you castles to bare minimum (to save in wages) and b) start the building process. Now you can camp out or something and just wait. No-one is forcing you to actually do something... except maybe for the Marshall, but that's "rare".

Now if you have an army, you can go plunder for fun and ofc buying and reading a book makes the time run pretty nicely. And naturally... if you want to play the game through, it takes around 50-100 hours to get to be the king (at least seems like that for me and my first game time), so in that time you can build plenty. I'm going on day 240 something and still going strong.

50% decrease in improvement build times at engineering 10, that's a pretty substantial increase. Not sure about the specifics of the siege weapon speeds.
