Empire factions getting destroyed very early.

I think if the empire factions had an ally especially a regionally close ally associated with them at the start that would eliminate one border for them to protect and might aid in preventing the snowball effect.

Do we want a status quo, though?

In a certain context, snowballing makes sense...I think most people just don't want it to be so predictable or so early.

What are your guys' thoughts on slowing down conquest by imparting movement and consumption penalties (and economic penalties) during winter months? It's somewhat realistic (logistics concerns outside of the campaign season) and it would allow moments of pause between a big battle or settlement loss for warring factions to recover somewhat and prepare for the next offensive/defensive campaign as opposed to an uninterrupted domino effect.

That's true as well i suppose, but that would upset the status quo that we are trying to achieve in order to limit snowballing

well in my gameplay western empire was quite decent holding strong and expanding they had 8000 strength until i made my own kingdom and destroyed them.
northern and southern were crushed by khuzait which became super power in all of my 5 gameplay khuzait always become super power and destroy the southern empire but it seems lore appropriate since the empire is falling in civil war so they are crushed from both within and outside unless you become the hero who unite and saves them

So this is why Strugia is desroyed in Bannerlord... Because Raganvad is insane
I am with Strugia (3200) as Vasal atm. We were in war with NE (strenght around 3300) and Battania (3200). With serious effort we could weaken Battania step by step, taking their castles.
Vlandia declared war on Strugia and after few days every sane clan leader suggested to make peace with Battania. Guess what, Raganvad denied it. Almost all clans were for peace only Ragavand and one tier 1 clan had 60% majority. Strugia which could keep up only with my help (otherwise they would loose everything) is in war also with Vlandia now (4000). All this because of insane ruler.
I guess that is a good reason to be destroyed

At my campaigm, western empire got delted as well. Most of their fief was taken by sturgia, shortly after northern empire took them. But southern and northern empire, they were both incredibly powerful (ofc khuzait is the superpower as always)

A fair number of posters have supported the point of view that, as they are the only person experiencing their particular playthrough, any significant map changes should primarily (or only) happen by player intervention. It's true though that many people want a dynamic world, but it is just to show that there is no real consensus here.

(I'm only pulling quotes from that one thread because otherwise I'd be spending hours digging them out from a dozen similar threads)

There is already supposed to be a (presumably significant) snow debuff to movement speed on the map, so implementing that sounds like good sausage to me.

I can't speak for anyone but myself but what I'd like to see is that any faction could take over the map with luck, and enough time. Right now I almost never seen anyone but Khurzait or maybe Vlandia succeed unless I intervene. That mean if I join a faction it's either an uphill battle or a easy slide down. I'd like to play with Sturgia but no way in hell would I when they take on 3,4 and sometimes 5 factions at a time it's too frustrating to me, just my 2 cents.

Not my experience in 1.5 the Southern faction is supreme, with both North and West doing poor especially the West which is down to a single town. All the ‘barbarian‘ factions have made small inroads at the rebellious empires expense. I am a mercenary company fighting for the Sturgians and have definitely helped them manage to hold on to their lands.

This happens in most strategy games, where snowballing eventually occurs because there aren't enough rules in place to stop an AI from taking everything. You need penalties for being overaggressive. Since this game can't figure out whether it wants to be a RPG or a strategy game, you are left with a lackluster end result, and the snowballing looks to be particularly bad.

Something like Europa Universalis 4 would be good. Peace treaties that can't be broken. Having a reason for declaring war (casus belli). And finally, heavy penalties for warmongers, where other nations will form coalitions to stop them if they are too strong.

It seems it has finally worked out. Ragavand had drastic decrease in influence (he probably used lot of influence to sabotage peace treaties).
Strugia was able to make peace with both (Battania and NE) for a tribute. Nice
