Anyone here read the book Duncton Wood, by William Horwood? I read a lot, and I like to read, but that book was the best one I ever read. Mind you, most of the books I've read are rather unknown, and I never buy new books. My father finds a lot of books for me. He finds them in backyards and places like that, stuff that people throw out, but are still fine. "Klunse", we danes call it. I don't know if there's an english word for it though. Almost all his things are found that way, makes his house awesome (!).

Anyway, Duncton Wood is about moles, and reminds me of Watership Down. It's about the mole system/city/whatever called Duncton, which is dominated by the eeeebil mole Mandrake. The story follows the young mole Bracken, who's in love with Mandrake's daughter Rebecca. The whole system's falling apart, there's sickness, no religion, and so forth.

Anyone read it? If so, what did you think?

It sounds intriguing. Haven't read it tough. Have you read 'Tales From Watership Down'. I have just read a book that I was broken-hearted to discover is out of print!
It's called "Villains By Necessity" by Eve Forward and boy oh boy it's a real gem and definitely not a well known one.
If anyone knows where I can get it new or at least fairly new then !PLEASE! let me know.

Oh my God, I read these years ago!

There's a whole series, and they're brilliant. I'd totally forgotten about them until I saw this thread, and now I'm overcome with an urge to read them again.

Really!? Are you talking about Duncton Wood or Villains By Necessity?
And if Villains By Necessity then what others are there?

Aaaaagh!
(Sobs for about a hour, pounds head against keyboard - accidentally entering launch co-ordinates for his position. Realises mistake but hits enter key anyway...BOOM!)

Sooo long Nightblade! *gets covered in Nightblade bits*

@ Lep: I've only read the first one, and that copy's older than me. I found some reviews on the great big web, but since they said that the new ones are, well, new, it seemed much like an effort to make money, not good reading. I would love to read them, but I can't find them, though.

I haven't read them in a looong time, so I can't be too sure, but I do remember the earlier ones being better though.

It was a lot darker, if I remember correctly.

And from what I remember, I would recommend them, but because it was so long ago don't take my words as canon. Wikipedia them and see what you think.

Yeah, they're darker. I won't reveal anything, but there's some mean **** happening in there.
