Dumb Ethnography Megathread

I mean, it is and should stay primarily an American social terminology, we didn't start applying it elsewhere. That's y'alls fault.

My entire county is basically 99.9% white british. The only outlier to this is Bath, to which there is a sizeable asian population but compared to the overall make up of Somerset it's nothing.

It gets progressively more and more WASPy as you go more and more west until you reach rural cornwall where unless you're in a holiday town you will not find any other ethnicity other than burn in the sun white british person.

It makes sense though, England is the originator of WASP, we perfected it.

Who's we? Half the time you're saying you're from Portugal, but because you moved to England you ***** about it from a foreigner's perspective (why isn't the entire country like London, how awful that it isn't), describe it using derogatory AMERICAN ideas that have no relevance here and call yourself British at the same time??!? Oh no, how terrible that part of Britain might be almost entirely populated by British people, I wonder how your 'fellow Brits' manage not to vomit in disgust at the terrible lack of diversity on an hourly basis. You call yourself British at the same time as spouting your whiny minority imported complaints, as if Britain is nothing but a theme park for foreigners where there should be no sign of any native predominance.

Animal cruelty is a proud European tradition! :iamamoron:

Now that America is in charge, this is basically what we expect from you Limeys.

Tbh this was what I imagined for many years. I was very surprised when I discovered so many people have attitudes like 'this is an officially christian country' or 'empire did nothing wrong'. For me Western countries were some sort of utopias where all sorts of diseases like nationalism(at least among urban/educated people) were eradicated and all people behaved according to transcendent reason rather than nativism

God you're edgy, oh yes "transcedent reason" and "nativism" are mutually nullifying, or in simple words there can never be a rational reason for someone to be a nativist. Whatever that implies. It has meant different things in different times, especially now.

And? I happen to live in a Western liberal democracy, I still don't understand your viewpoint. Telling me others do is irrelevant. I know you aren't here to answer my questions but posting something with such provocative language is bound to garner a response.

Western countries people are less liberal and more native-predominant than I used to think.

thats a common misunderstanding among western people. the media makes it seem like the common man is liberal and it is a cultural standard. I'd say thats true, just not the liberal that we are commonly discussing these days.

I'd argue that the disconnect between the "reality" of a country and the "ideal" is actually the most common experience when you move to any place for an extended period of time.

Classic examples would be immigrants to the US showing up with the belief that the American Dream is 1000% real ("all you do is show up, work hard, and they give you $5 million dollars and citizenship!!!") or to me high school Americans/Europeans that think Japan is some nerd paradise that will accept them no matter how awkward they are as a human being.

Still better than the early 90s Britain I came to thinking "ah yes, finally capitalism, teach me your ways" only to find out half of the country was subscribed to Troskyist newsletters because apparently closing coal mines with no coal left in them is pure bourgeois hatred and the other half was on heroin.

its interesting how in Britain closing coal mines causes the growth of the left while closing mines in West Virginia just reinforces the right. Weird difference.

kk. thought maybe we could have a discussion instead of pointing out the obvious. its really that simple huh?
