Duelling system

Users who are viewing this thread

Duelling was a common practice in the middle ages, specially amongs the nobility, so i think implementing a system for duelling would make the game more enjoyable and realistic, my ideas for this system are the following:
-Friendly duels: inviting companions, family members and noble friends for friendly duels to raise relationship with them. This should also give reduced XP for the involved parties and should be limited once a day.
-Trial by combat: In kingdoms that do not have the trial by jugdment policy you should be able to duel to clean (or at least dwindle your criminal rating) if you win, or death (be it by death in combat or execution) if you loose
-Duel to resolve battles: If you encounter a noble with a equal force or slightly inferior force (or slightly superior if the noble is honorable) you should be able to resolve the battle with a single duel that can be either: you against the enemy commander or your companion against the enemy commander. The winner should have the option to capture the looser (if it is a companion against enemy commander scenario the player should be captured as well)
-Duel to the death: You should be able to challenge your enemies (be them from the same kingdom or a diferent kingdom) to a duel to the death. The loser dies in combat, and the winner gains honor and loose relation with all of the deaceased friends and allies
Implementing this duelling system would definetly make bannerlord a better game

I agree that some form of a duel system should exist, but not that every battle can be solved with it. Additionally, if dueling with a Lord or a noble instead of waging war, there should be a cost. The opponent should be formidable, so it is not the "Easy way out" to cheese the system and defeat someone without resources and pretty much skip the battle. Ai in duels should provide more challenge and ofcourse, not all Lords and Nobles should accept it. Regardless, if not the Noble/Lord dueling system to resolve combat, that option should be available if you come to a Lord's castle or city you could challenge them to a friendly duel, and if you win, increase your renown as a legendary and notorious fighter. This will also be a great way to humble other Lords and impress them with your combat expertise, perhaps making them more inclined to join you, ally with you, or see you as a friend.

Perhaps even betting on some friendly duels. Brainstorming here to inspire the community or the devs reading it.

To clarify, about duelling to resolve battles: the enemy lord should only accept this if he has:
- A small or overwelming disadvantage (if you have a overwelming advantage and opt for a duel the jokes are on you)
-The battle is really balanced
-He has a small advantage (should only apply to honorable lords)

so pure duelist can become a king?
duels shouldn't affect the game that much

I think only nobles could do it. You wouldn't waste your time duelling a peasant haha
And maybe only duel those considered as enemy of the familiy.

Dueling for status should also be a thing.

You insult a lord or are insulted. A way to resolve the insult is with a duel. The winner gets a decent renown bonus and maybe some influence if both are vassals of the same kingdom. The loser takes a renown hit and an influence hit. The down side is doing this greatly lowers your reputation with the targeted lord.

You can also turn the duel into a gamble by betting money on yourself to win. This was a common tactic in societies with dueling laws. Some people who were skilled with a sword would purposefully go out and get people to challenge them to duels, then bet money on it. It was a sort of legal robbery done by exploiting peoples' egos.

That would be a really fun way to expand your status in the early and mid-game. You'd basically be a rogue who beats on the nobility for fame and money but at the cost of making those lords hate your guts.

Oh, and of course you should be able to duel people for the hand of a woman you both happen to be courting. Marriage mechanics need to be expanded on for that to work though.

i guess ai is too stupid for this. Duel in mnb reality is fair fight with same unit type on both sides, but one side is controlled by human, other side is controlled by ai, it is very big difference that will ruin gameplay. In most games this difference is compensated by unit asymmetry - xcom, darkest dungeon, dark souls etc. In mnb ai is designed for massive battles, not for duels. It needs less performance per unit and is far less complex and responsive than duel focused ai. Even if devs or modders add duel - duels will be very easy money for good players or will be too hard(challenging) for decent player and will be mostly ignored as mechanic. I guess.

That's why the duel comes with a downside of losing rep with the other lord even if you win. Sure, it'd be easy enough money. But lords you've already beaten probably won't fall for it a second time and eventually everyone in the realm will hate you.

It can be further balanced by not having a 100% success rate. Not all lords will fall for it. The higher your renown is the less likely lords want to accept the challenge unless they have a trait like brave or honorable. Challenging someone might be a free action but convincing them to gamble on it should probably be a persuasion check that can fail too.

The important thing is that it'd be fun and immersive. Balance in a single player game that is so easily modable is honestly a secondary concern to just having fun.
