Someone might have mentioned this before, but not that I've seen. Having never worn armor before, someone will have to help me out here. Is there any reason you couldn't throw yourself to the ground in chainmail to avoid a sword swipe from a passing horseman? If not, and I sure can't think of one, it seems to me like it'd be a useful feature, and a sensible one to have. Especially in the arena.

Go ahead and try to get up quickly. Oh, and dodge the second swipe coming down at your back once you're on the ground.

Yeah, ducking is totally unrealistic. Just press space and glide over them instead.

LMFAO

Oh, and your sig makes me fuzzy inside.

On topic, no to ducking - yes to non-ducking.

Dropping to the ground when a horse is charging you doesn't seem like a great idea. Unless you want those hoofprints in your back as a fashion statement or something.

Takes the whole "body modification" thing to a whole new level.

Crossbowmen "duck" when they're reloading, and that always seems to foil my attempts at ride-by sabre death. If they are able to avoid damage in that way, it at least seems fair that others should be able to do that too.

Of course, that doesn't happen much in the latest patch, as they ususally switch to melee when I get that close. However, when sniping at crossbowmen, I notice the same thing; I have to fire at just the right time so they don't duck and avoid my head shots.

Okay, so you'd have some trouble getting up quickly. At least you've avoided that first swing, and if the sword wielder was riding his horse at full gallop, he'd also need some time to get turned around and come at you for a second pass. As for the hoof thing, you wouldn't be directly under the horse, because you weren't directly in the horse's path to begin with, just that of the rider's sword swing. It gives you a chance. Would such a maneuver do you any good if you were alone against 3 mounted knights? Of course not. But what if it's a pitched battle? The rider may not have leisure to take a lot of time trying to kill you specifically.

I definatly wouldn't be ducking if a warhorse came at me.

Maybe a ungraceful dive into the nearest pool of mud, and a sprint to the nearest friend with a spear.

Fine, a dive. That works. I'm just saying that it's be cool having some way to put off my impending doom at the hands of a charging lance thrust for a few moments by some means a little more dependable that "walk to the side, and hope for the best".

I've already said in some post that I'd like to have an ability to make a quick sidejump. That could be even better than duck, I suppose, and more realistic too. Btw, dodging an attack is a VERY-VERY-VERY hard task - if you'll duck too late, you won't dodge the strike. If you'll duck too early, your enemy will correct his sword's traectory and you'll recieve a mighty blow on your head or shoulders, and neither sounds good to me  . According to my RL fighting experience - if your enemy fights with full force and speed, it is almost impossible to dodge his hit, and even more impossible to duck and not to recieve a hit)) And, as it was said before, even light chainmail makes it quite hard to stand on feet if standing on knees.
I am for an ability to avoid being hit when not wielding a shield, but it must be a question of YOUR reaction, and not character's attributes. This option could give you a 10-20% chance (that depends on your reflexes) to react in time and to avoid attack.
This side-step could be made by pressing 'jump' and strafe buttons simultaneously.
So what do you think?

Isn't there already an ability to avoid damage without a shield already in place? I believe it's called "parrying."

As far as the whole problem with someone lancing you from horseback, the most effective (although not very realistic) strategy is to get your shield up and manuever in front of the horse. It'll rear up, and there's enough time for you to get in some swings before the rider recovers.

So, it is possible to deal with riders while on foot. It's just extremely counter-intuitive.

Tiedye
And if you have an empty crossbow? What's then?) Make mad eyes and run on your enemy with battlecries?) Not quite effective, imho)

And...if all you have is an empty crossbow, shouldn't you be killed by a charging knight anyway? I kinda like the paper-rock-scissors aspect of the game. This is especially apparent in the arena, since you're given a set outfit/weapons layout and can't just switch to something else. If you're an archer, and a swordsman closes range, you're dead, just as it should be. If you don't have a shield and are trying to rush and archer on foot, you will most likely die before making it there. And...of course, you, with your empty crossbow, are easily mowed over by that knight. I like not feeling godlike when i play a game, knowing that i can't just overcome any challenge the game throws at me simply by using a different move.

Might be a good playstyle balancing idea to have a kind of acrobatic rolling dodge manuver that gets you out of the way of a horse charge. The trick would be that you need to be wearing very little armor and have a decent agility. You could use the move+jump combo as mentioned above.

Without the right armor or agility it might just give you a slightly effective sidestep dodge.

instead of dodging a horse bearing down on you, why dont you just whip out your spear, point it outwards, and laugh as that horse gets impaled on your spear while the rider gets spilled onto the ground, just like in real life. (btw, make it so polearms used by foot soldiers have a chance to dismount the rider please)

I like the idea of diving out of the way with the strafe + jump buttons. I also think that pikes and other weapons should have a special 'prepare' ability (activated by clicking attack and defend buttons simultaniously). for pikes, this ability would be used to lodge a pike in the ground in order to gouge hourses.
