Don't pay off a bigger army

Essentially I joined a big battle between two empires one of which I am at war with. Afterwards I was attacked by the remnants of the losing sides army which still outnumbered my own troops, while the allied side moved away.
I took the option to pay them off to not get attacked. Apparently this means I have sworn not to attack them. However I can now be attacked by any of their people small or big sized armies and I can no longer defend myself. The attack or send my troops in button is unchoosable. My only options are surrender or try to get away. They can then chase me down again and again. My only options are again surrender or try to run no matter if I am attacked or not.
Basically have had to start my campaign again.
Anyone have any idea how long the swear not to attack lasts?

I did this with a Kuzhait general who had triple my men. For about 5-6 in game days I couldn’t attack or pillage anything. Thankfully I didn’t have to restart or leave my kingdom.
