Does the army charge random or do i something wrong?

When i fight together with my lord, i can decide which unit typ i control. I often take the cavalry. At first i give them the order "follow me". Then when i are on the flank on the enemy, i give the order "charge". But it looks like they don't charge in my line of sight. It looks they don't charge straight forward, they goe left, right, kill what they see. But i would attack like follow me, search the flank, charge, after charge follow me again, go back from the army, charge again in flank, follow me and so on.
Do i something wrong?

i think charge means attack at will... most likely the closest enemy to them

usually i order them to go to a position that i want them to charge, than when they get close i order them to charge, than they will charge what you want them to charge , if i do not do it like this they will simply charge another target.
