Does the AI cheat?

Whenever I'm lining up a target with my polearm on horseback, it seems like the ai can just sort of dodge quickly out of the way as if they have some kind of ai-only speed boost.

I've tried dodging like this myself and it seems impossible. It literally seems like the AI can move faster temporarily just to get out of the way, and it's really starting to piss me off.

You'll find that the AI generally moves faster than you in all aspects of the game, especially early on when you are low level. In the training sessions, the higher level combatants can swing much faster than you for sure. On the battlefield, they also can move faster. As for that side-step move they use... it takes a while to master, but eventually, you will be able to couch-lance them nearly every time.

There's nothing more frustrating than my speed at the moment.

I hate it if they take down my horse and I am forced to attack with my super sloth speed using a lance.

Just can't seem to run fast enough to couch when on foot !

I stil say they have super dodge abilities.

It's like they just magically flit out of the way at a second's notice, leaving me thinking: "Wtf!? NOOOOOO"

But now that I have my spirited charger. I just bowl down infantry all the live long day. Meeting my pole hammer, or the front of my horse, they go down

The last thing I would like to see in the battlefield is poor-AI wanderer enemies. How can I enjoy fighting when I know that my enemies eventually (or at least usually) die?

I wish I could see more of those AI cheats.

Chargers don't rear for ****.

They're the bad-ass nuggaz of the Mount and Blade horse world.

The only thing you have to worry about is taking too many hits. Which isn't usually a problem since I consistently get hits by rabbles of bandits to my horse that result in 0 damage.

No. I'm all for a nice challenging fight, but I hate seeing guys magically dodge my perfectly lined up pole-hammer/heavy-charger pain train of death... or unconsciousness....

Defeat is an inevitability when I decide to fight someone at this point, It's all just in how enjoyable it is.

This is generally the result of two things, sometimes both. High level enemies you are against in tournament (like Xerina) or champion fighters in training, are very high level and have very high athletics. So they're much faster than your low level character. You need at least 5 athletics to cope with. Second, unmounted characters have no inertia in this game, so they change direction of movement suddenly.

Third, unlike archers whose field of vision is limited, melee guys have eyes around their heads, so they can see you coming from behind.

Well they have a lot quicker swordarms, which can be noticed when you're against a higher level opponent and you're defending yourself only with your weapon. You know what I mean, when they start an overhead swing and you raise your defence, and they suddenly change the direction of the swing.

That doesn't bother much. Much more annoying is that they can throw their javelins and axes at superhuman distances. Also, they can see through the fog, which combined with their superaccurate and strong throws, is pretty damn frustrating at times.

How do you couched-lance anyway? Do you have to swing that damn lance or just hold it(like before swinging by holding mouse button) and charge the target with your lance held that way?

lances are thrust only. i hate them personally. they dont hit enough and if your horse is killed your doomed.

To couch lance just hold it out in front of you. Dont press a single button! Then you'll change your mind about lances.

There is a way to beat the Ai's inherant ability to be faster in a swing, even if they are lower level.

Move your character into the swing, so when your going from right to left, turn your character to the left - it'll make it so the sword swipe hits them a lot faster than it would if you swung facing them, and had to let the sword travel all the way to their location.

Interesting but this works fine. I used to do this trick in the training and its results were great!

This sideway attack works very well against spearmen, or some sort who use weapons with liner attack motion (thrusting and overhead swing). If your Athretic skill is high enough, you can dodge the thrust and at the same time, slice the enemy.

What i find fun is when you're on a slight incline you can jump over someones sideswing  But in regards to the original post, i know what you're talking about. It has nothing to do with athletics or agility. What the AI will do sometimes is sidestep circle at near light speed when you get within 2 or 3 feet of them. They just kind of fly out of your way, 3 or 4 times the speed they should be able to sidestep. In which case, if you aimed you lance properly, you miss...period. It is most noticable however when you're on foot in the arena trying to run up to a foot archer. Ever notice how sometimes he sidestep circles away from you even if your athletics is higher? So again, if an enemy does this while you're trying to lance him, you miss, since you can't corner worth a damn at full gallop, especially when you're close to him already.
