Does everything stand on its head?

Um, dunno if this has been mentioned before, but...

I always read here that the sea is in the south, and the Four Way Inn etc. is north of Zendar etc...

Only that mods/native/intro_text.txt it says that Swadia is in the west, and Vaegier is in "the eastern lands"... which means that the Sea where those Nordic Sea Raiders come from is North of Zendar... and the Salt Mines are to the South.

I'm confused too, which way is north? I assume that the big ocean is north because every time I start a game it is on top of the screen, but when I move the map around the names of the forts are always right side up. Please help.

Positive Y values on the map take you towards the ocean. All the rest is cartographer's nonsense.
