how do you get into the in-game editor?

Open the launcher --> Configure --> Advanced --> Edit Mode Enabled (check the box) --> Video (Enable windowed mode) --> Start the game.

Then go to a scene and press Ctrl+E

Well first off make sure your in windowed mode. You can easily press "Alt+Enter" Keys to go from full-screen to window mode. It has been a while since I've used the scene editor but remember that you'll have to AI mesh the map if you want bots to run around on the map.

If I were you I'd mess with some pre-made ready-to-play maps to see how they were built.
