Do troops loose its upgrade if i don't do it before i put it in a town?

I want to not pay so much wages if i am not at war. i have gotten alot of troops in tier 4 and ready for tier 5. if i put them in a town, do i loose the progress?

I don't think so. I have taken troops from a garrison to my party and they have been ready to immediately be promoted.

you dont lose it...sometimes might look like but just pass them from one side to other and leave town..and should be ok

While we're at it: do troops actually earn XP (from the fief building or anything else) while stationed in the garrison? I know they're not automatically upgraded. The second question is: do keep dungeon prisoners "break" over time (like they do while in the party) and become recruitable?

I haven't played since 1.5.3, but:
- When you place troops which are ready for upgrade into a garrison, they will automatically upgrade using your gold so you can save money by doing this. However, the unit is not upgraded when the upgrade splits into different branches (ie: recruits that can either become melee or range) & if the upgrade requires warhorses.

- Troops do earn XP but it's not really noticeable because they only get 2xp per day or whatever it was
- Prisoners do not break and become recruit-able, you have to have them in your party

Again.. This is from my experience pre-1.5.4
