My issue with the concept of smithing is:if you're using it for profit as a merchant type of character who only fights bandits and looters, it'll never be actually profitable. You won't have the materials and parts recipes you'd need to actually make it worthwhile and if you fight Lord armies, you're probably in a spot where you have better things to do than smithing

I end up conquering the map before I can level it high enough to craft decent weapons anyways. So I don't really see the point of it in its current state. That's where the smithing mod(s) come in to play, I guess.

Right now the smithing system is a grindfest much like Skyrim, where you have to smith 9000 iron daggers in order to be able to smith something valuable. Here we have to smelt over 9000 pitchforks to be able to craft something decent. Definitely needs adjustments.

Smithing is a little fun... But totally useless.
- You can create your custom weapons
- You have another way to earn lots of money.
That's the only 2 things about smithing.

No quests related, no renown, no shop, no consequences on units,.... Smithing is just an optional feature beside the core of the game.

I love smithing. I built my last character around it to get three starting focus points. Some of the RNG dependence could be improved but it's a great side game.

9k pitchforks wont do.

make good two handers at first until you get to things like harpoons. I made a sword yesterday from 8 fine steels with big broad kaskara blade and it sold for 105k, (bought 2x 48k tabards over mail) the blade is from 5 fine steels, whole sword 135 length with T4 handle. You dont sell it. You smelt it, 1 fine steel gets downgraded to Steel, so you need to add one more steel to make fine steel and make the same sword.

I got 18 skills from 119 to 137 from making just one. It is very easy to level once you get the right parts and know how the game calculates the value, polearms dont work when they have 1handed first.

1 iron + 1 wood + char, 58k - you dont need to sell it, they wont have money anyway. Smelt, make new.

dont bother yourself with red numbers from way higher difficulty. Way more exp that way anyway, when you smelt, only 1 of the best materials gets downgraded a tier lower, meaning you can spam making very expensive weapons.

you can buy some T6 weapons that contain fine steel, sometimes even thamaskene, smelt them, to save time instead of making materials yourself.
.
rusty sax is smelted for 1 steel.

rusty weapons are also great, they smelt into the same stuff as standard ones.

This sounds broken to me ^^ and not intended. First you have to come to the point you can craft such a sword. Im spending a lot of time in refining and smelting at the moment I am around 60 skillpoints and anything valueable to forge seems far away... But thanks for the hint

Much more interesting: How did you get to 118 skill points and did you have fun with this mechanic?

There should be crafting for each stat. We should be able to make bows, crossbows, armor, shields, horse barding, etc. There are other things that can be added for crafting like documents or maps that speed up travel on the map for a time. Engineering could be revamped a bit so that you could make siege engine parts for assembly when you arrive on location for faster sieges. And crafting stamina is a good idea but for all that is holy, it comes back with any time pass not just sitting in a how.

that 1 iron, 1 wood, 1 charcoal is from the harpoon, you make one with a 1 skill smith and he might have 35+ skills as well. Insta cap reached. You can have compaions at least do something like 2 charcoals from 3 wood even with no focus, if they have some endurance, or if they are high endurance, make them the smith, after all, your leveling up slows you everywhere else due to exp nerf per each character level. You need 7 End+5 focus to reach/exceed 275 skill. 6 endurance hits a hard cap at 274.

it wasnt to do with fun, it was to make most expensive stuff to unlock more expensive stuff, because it lots of exp, so really it doesnt have to be time consuming. Instead of selling all the loot, scrap it, turn in to best two handers you can do, not overly heavy, so it had good swing speed. Blade max length with swords.

sure it needs adjustments, but if you get an early javelin unlock, especially the harpoon head youll be at 200 smithing skill in like 15 minutes if you have focus and END. Also, even when you no longer gain exp, you can still unlock new things. when smithing. However, exp is tied to how expensive the product becomes, which is tied to its actual stats, not just difficulty. Difficulty doesnt do nothing when product is inferior, so dont bother making 1 hander swords ever with current system.

Agree with the stamina issue you pointed out - seems like it was an emergency implementation preventing players from buying thousands of wood refining them with bash clicking for fast leveling

Didn't notice so far it is possible to make a companion smithing for you Oo... Don't know if I got you exactly right.^^

While I can't speak for TomaSkTemplar, with me it was literally just smith a couple of war razor pole arms or any javelin other than the basic head and you will get double digit smithing increases if you have the focus points to spare in it per item. This is because they retail for 60k+ (or more money than any town has). It is RNG that you get the parts and a little broken when you do (as I mentioned earlier I use them as gifts to Lords in barter to increase charm). It also lets you level at a much quicker pace.
Fun is a different matter smithing is to much repetition to be enjoyable. If I was carefully building the right ingredients to make a perfect or even long term use weapon it would be fine. Instead you are an assembly line just bashing out item after item that you do not want in the hope of unlocking either the part you want or items that make the process quicker (at the expense of breaking the economy).

yes, you have in the lower left corner, your face, when you mouse over it, your stamina number shows, and you can click it and choose who else is to do the smithing, so if you want a smithing company chewing through hundreds of wood, it is possible. Or smelt with non-specialists, it is much less exp than smithing new.

This a very helpful advice Sir - Thx a lot

Dear TW,
that's maybe a hint to consider the improvement of the smithing interface - maybe placing all available companions as pictures beside each other and show the chosen by a highlighted frame or something like that

i like making custom weapons, i really don't like anything else about the system as it exists. if they aren't going to retool it I think I would prefer just being able to purchase a custom weapon for gold instead. also think they missed an opportunity to tie this into the player owned smithies.

I like the idea of custom weapons, dislike the execution though. The grind is awful and the mechanics are meh. I made a thread where I outlined some suggestions.
A simpler option would be if the player characters weren't the actual smiths, instead you could design the weapon, pay an NPC smith and pick the weapon up when it's done.
It would make far more sense for a player character (especially a noble one) to commission a custom weapon instead of making one him/herself.

well, master smith is basically someone who specializes in smithing ... but I suppose it should have been crafting in general, all the equipment from armor to all the gear there is. Sure you wont make bigger armor, because it is scaled to anybody to fit perfectly.

what would be really on the imba scale, would be bows, crossbows getting bigger arms  and you making the arrows, bolts. How heavy they should get, that would be pretty ... hilarious. But at least you can do some fun stuff with it.

make our own shields, so if you are big, you make a big one, small for smaller.
something quite off topic came to my mind, is increasing hp based on how big the player/npc is  they are bigger target already. Arrows or cuts need to go through more material. Fatty ones having a chest airbag  and so on  damage reduction

Skill level doesn't effect what you can craft. It only affects the final quality, but If you're lucky enough to unlock a powerful component early on, you can start making super-expensive weapons right away. 2H swords, 2H polearms and javelins are the best money makers and a good one can give you a ton of smithing xp each time so your skill shoots up very fast. Out of all the skills, Smithing's the easiest one to max out by far.
