Do Lords upgrade their armies?

Just curious about this, I've seen some Lord parties spawn with a few high level troops...but not many. Most of them still carry the same tier troops even after a couple of battles. Do Lords upgrade their armies or not?

I'm curious about that myself.

I think they do upgrade their troops, since I notice that "hardened" guys (especially Ragnar and Harlaus) have far more elites than losers who are only patrolling around their castles. Just look at a typical war party with a king and a bunch of lords, you will see that some have far more elite army composition that others. Usually those who have fiefs near the border with enemies do have stronger armies - upgraded in combat.

I also think that lords do level up themselves. I often see little "+" just next to captured lord's name. And when I capture them again, they don't have it anymore. So they must level up somehow.

I wish there was "tell me about your skills" option for every single character in the game. I'd like to ask Ragnar about his skills for example to see if he has Power Striker 7 like his Huscarls. And how much leadership they have so they can haul 400 troops with them.

The impression that I've had is that their troops advance through experience gained from fighting, but don't seem to benefit from any Training skill their leaders might have (which as far as I know, is hidden; I'm not aware of any way to see the stats of a lord, except maybe through an outside editor).

Sometimes lords spawn with a lot more higher-level troops than at other times.  I was eye-balling the Swadians in my last game.  Sometimes a lord would spawn with a large number of weaker troops (militia; crossbowmen, infantry; only a few Men-At-Arms); other times the same lord would spawn with stronger troops (lots of Men-at-Arms and some Knights).  Harlaus would more often spawn with better troops until I'd defeated him many times.

Well one thing I noticed in .96 is that their wealth diminishes  when maintaining a large army.  In my last game, Lord Brula was wealthy until he defeated an enemy army with a ton of prisoners.  He picked up hundreds of new troops, and the next time I checked his wealth he was in the hole by 25K.  It didn't seem to affect his army though (they didn't desert, etc.).

In another recent thread, someone posted that when they asked a lord what he was doing while he was hanging out next to a village, he responded that he was recruiting from the village.  Many players posted that they were quite surprised by this.

The enemy does upgrade their forces, I doubt they use the training skill but the soldiers get experience.
I know this because I have run into upgraded female units, camp followers and next level. They can not be recruited but must be trained, but if the training skill was used all the low level units should be upgraded then they stay long guarding a city.

The other units do upgrade.
As they take losses and recruit new units this barely visible though. You usually only notice when you encounter troops that are only possible by upgrade like the mentioned female troops.
If you don't have any hero with Trainer skill you notice that the upgrades are rather slow - it's the same with the other units.

Ok thanks for the input guys. I've got another question now. I'm currently the Marshall in the Swadian Rebellion. I just started a campaign and had 4 lords following me. After we took Praven, I ended the campaign and all the Lords went on their separate ways.

My question, will the Lords recruit new troops on their own to replace the ones lost during the campaign or do I have to individually give troops to each Lord ?

I once saw a Nord Lord recruit from a Swadian village. I had seen Lords recruit from villages before but this stuck out as odd to me.
