Do companionhorses get lamed?

I have never noticed if their horses get lamed or if it is just the player's. After about 8 months including time on original MB I would say no.

likely this is a gameplay issue.

Would you like to have to check every companions' horse after each fight by talking to them and having them show their equipment to you?
