Anyone who's ever plaied Oregon Trail knows that not too long ago, diseases such as scurvy were a big problem. If party members were randomly stricken with illness from time to time the game may be a smidgen more emersive. perhapse the best way to demonstrate the poor medecine of the Mount & Blade setting would be to have severely wounded men amputate a limb after battle (do to gaingreen and other such complications). I don't know but the idea of a party member hobbleing around on a peg leg during a battle w/ a couple arrows lodged in it just makes me laugh.
Some one posted earlier about a possible "hardcore" game setting where loosing a battle results in the death of your charactor and deletion of the save file. I think the amputation thing would work well with such a game style because you would get one second chance if you some how run into bad luck, however, that would probably defeat the perpose of a "hardcore" mode.
NOTE: this suggestion has nothing to do with chopping peoples limbs off in battle. Amputation should occure after a battle.
