Hey all, just created an account to post some of my thoughts on Perisno current versus past (0.81) versions.
1. Venetor
2. Other factions
3. Music/technicals/updates
4. Items etc.
1. Venetor is my favourite faction and I definitely think they should stay in the game. They are super strong with decent variety and high level troops (so they're balanced for the player as you cannot get armored/empyrean legionaries just from training over a few days).
They bring disruptive gameplay in the world map by being strong enough to take on other factions but not in an unfair way (like the zann do). They can be created by the player at almost any time, so the twist they add to the game is fantastic.
However their questline has one of the most nonsensical designs imaginable. You assault a fortress of 10-20 crossbowmen with 5 units. If they die you just immediately reattempt with full health. Afterwards Ral Daiun brings 400 units to the same fortress (???) against your 40-300+ units.
There just needs to be a small change so that you assault the fortress with your army (instead of 4 units).
The initial quest for Fort Trilond/Third Legion Fort is also silly. You have to take on a garrison of 450 but have unlimited time and attempts to do that. You cannot be assisted by lords or by your mercenary escort (why?) so you just have to lose dozens or hundreds of soldiers in either an annoying loss, or an extremely boring F1 tab archer spam.
The player should be able to use an escort/lords to besiege it, or maybe Atanos Octiem just meets you in field battle and then you just fight 20-50 units in the castle.
2. All of my recent playthroughs, I've set the zann invasion date to day 10,000. This makes the game much better and more enjoyable.
Also there still isn't an option to become a vassal for Zann through dialogue?
I've done in previous playthroughs by him offering me a village and vassalage randomly, but it's very annoying to just sit on the world map and hope a) someone raids a zann village, b) he offers me the village and vassalage.
Zann have super good AI. He allocates fiefs almost instantly, their marshals move very quickly towards objectives (defending + taking castles and towns), their lords stick together, they get new lords and tend to keep them happy and loyal. They also have extreme numbers and quite strong units (except for sieges), so playing with them is really enjoyable.
On the downside, they completely ruin the game. They arrive on the map and instantly ruin half the factions on the map. Tolrania become extinct because they lose a lot of fiefs and are usually already at war with Maccavia/Elintor/Reich when the invasion happens. Falcons lose half their fiefs and if Hakkon or Elintor declare war on them, they generally don't recover, and go extinct.
Hakkon usually get destroyed by Drahara when the invasion happens, as they are at war with Drahara, Kaikoth, Zann, and sometimes Elinton and Falcon too.
Elintor suffer a lot and end up becoming a minor faction like Sut.
The invasions breaks the game. This is why the Venetor game introduction is better - they have numbers and elite troops and decent lords but don't instantly obtain half the map from half the factions.
Proposed solutions: allow the player to offer vassalage to Zann through dialogue; have Zann start with Zann Fort and a bunch of lords that play like any other normal AI (rather than giving them 20 fiefs spread across the map).
This way they can declare war on Maccavia and fight it out near Blackfist Castle and Forde, or Tolrania and fight over Leuven etc. It would make their growth organic and their gameplay fair.
Bakhal and Sut: these guys need a few changes. Bakhal are useless as their lords are solitary and are only focused on raiding villages or fighting lords; Sut either get lucky and take 1-2 castles/towns from Reich (if the latter are destroyed by Valahirs and others), or get destroyed by Reich very early. Bakhal usually get destroyed by Tumatarhun/Drahara/both.
Bakhal AI needs improvement, and their faction leaders should have better diplomatic relations with other factions, so they don't end up in a war of 4 confused lords versus 20 disciplined and united lords.
One final suggestion: make the world map random war parties be part of/allied to the faction they represent?
So if I'm following the Valahir or Elintor marshall I don't get taken prisoner by a random group of Volheere/Ankars (and then fail the "follow the marshall quest" too).
3. I went back to 0.81 yesterday to compare with the new one.
It has the best music and plays a lot more of it. It's very stable.
The new version just gives me (and others from what I've seen) a runtime error every few hours, sometimes completely at random. Example: I'm in a battle, I'm running towards the enemy, and I get runtime error. Or: I click on "talk to guild master" -> runtime error.
I think it would be better to just release 1 version a month but test it for bugs and crashes rather than 2 versions a week.
This way the changes could be unified as well, so e.g. a Lymbard troop tree could get released all at once.
I think the worst change from 0.81 to later versions is the loss of the very high quality music.
4. I like how the latest versions balanced the game and I like how dwarves and giants finally got high quality armors.
However I'm confused by why some items that were great or decent were removed entirely from the game?
For example, the perisno golden plate (that captains of the guard used to have) was super cool, as was the knightly plate armor. I get adding newer, much better textured armors and weapons, but why not leave some of the old ones in the game anyway?
As a side note, thrown weapons are nearly useless. I edited the item_kinds1 file to have 10 of each thrown spear and 8 throwing axes and now they are pretty good but bows and crossbows are still superior. I think this is what the thrown weapons need.
Finally. 0.8 hired troops were amazing in that they were customisable. Customising hired troops has now turned into an infuriating whack-a-mole game of "find the item that'll get you below 120%". This 120% cap should be completely removed. It's not fun and it doesn't bring anything positive to the gameplay at all.
To end: I would of course like to thank you for the amazing work done on textures, map changes, siege changes, AI changes (horse archers AI are impressive), faction reworks, Venetor full release and many other changes (e.g. the Dwallnor merchant). Fantastic work that has made Perisno one of the better games released in the past few years.
I just wanted to share some of my thoughts and a few suggestions in case anyone is interested.
Hope you enjoyed reading.
