A lot has been written and debated about best top tier soldiers. Why not discuss the previous tiers because unless you are a late game hero you will be stuck with a lot of them ?
I will start. So I am playing a series of Role Play oriented characters. No companions, no looting villages and so on. And only 2-4 trainer to boot depending on character. Thus I am actually forced to field proper balanced warbands instead of army of knights and mamlukes lol
Anyway I am using a lot of lower tier troops to back up the few elite heavy cav I got and here are my observations.
1. Swadian militia are somewhat overrated. Their main selling point is their hunting crossbow but they rarely hit targets. In melee they are decent. Can take of farmers, mountain bandits etc.
2. Rhodok crossbowmen and Nord Footmen are best tier 2 troops ever. It is a tie between who is the best. Nord footman have a fighting chance against top tier infantry from other factions. In shooting department Rhodok crossbowmen are as dependable as higher tier counterparts. They only lack behind in melee.
3. Nord Huntsmen has to be most useless unit in game. I have not seen them kill anything in my 1.5 years of playing warband. Has anyone ?
4. Sarranid and Vaegir footmen are target practice. The kind of thing you send 5 knights to kill by the dozens or sip tea as sharpshooters kill them so fast not a single one reaches melee distance.
5. In mid tier roles are changed. Nord trained footman is likely best followed by vaegir veteran. Trained footman is good enough for virtually any siege in game. Everything warrior to huscarl upwards is just overkill. Vaegir veteran are great with two handed axes and chance for horse. Not durable like Trained Footman but like all vaegir they are all offense with lot of punch with less defense.
6. Khergit lancers are best tier 4 cavalry. Almost as good as a Vaegir knight. Nord warriors are best tier 4 infantry followed by vaegir infantry.
