Its harder to gauge a person's trustworthiness when you can't look them in the eye, look for various twitches and subtle signs of lying.  Vocal patterns, physical reactions, and so forth are all excellent signs that are not unable to be used.  Hell, half of the early game for me is figuring out what people look like when they lie.  I'd lose a production center for knowledge about how a person lies.  Basically, the game loses a lot of its personal touch which is why I like it so.  I'll give it a shot, but we'll see.

I've played a few online versions, and despise it for
this reason. The fact that I never lie in the game
doesn't seem to come across over the net. Means that
my insane threats don't carry. I'm also good at reading
people in person, but can't tell **** from posts.

Still, I know some people prefer the game online, probably
for these very reasons.

Anyone who never lies in Diplo is destined to get rapped with an industrial-grade drill

I've been recruited from Tribal Wars to come play in this little game of world domination.  I'll just cross my fingers and hope to not be Italy... poor, poor, Italy.

Hey, I won my first game as Italy.  It helped that I managed to get Austro-Hungary to basically be my *****, but damnit, I won.

Hey Drach, nice to see you here. I'm with Meretha in this one. For some reoson people seems to hate Italy, when infact thatis the country I've managed to play my best games. The Lepanto tactic is my favourite, it only sucks when Austria knows what it's doing

Hey people, just read through it and remember now the days when I played the game in several versions. Forgot a lot about tactics though. Nevertheless, I'd love to join, though that would be my 3rd game here on the forums.

Sorry, am drunk. But as a patriot, I hope I'll be Austria-Hungary...

Patriots usually are

It's really great to see you to here. Only one more and we're ready to go!

Wanna try, if you could do it better here?

Nah. Wasn't too pleasant.

I disagree. The players I've seen do the best tend to seldom, if ever, lie.
First off, one can win group victories, so you need not ever fall out with
your allies. Secondly, alliances can be made with limited goals. I find
such goals to be much more trustworthy than something painted in
broad terms.

If you only lie, it's going to be pointless, but the nice thing is that one lie could make the difference. It's only a matter of finding the right moment (or not...).

Anyway, somebody else join in so we can get going.

Sir. Velmu 说:
Guys, lying is bad. REALLy bad!

I agree. Unless it wins you the game,
it's completely self-defeating, at least
among the people that I'm used to
playing with. Enough value truth in
their dealings, that they simply
would deal with someone else.

Ok, if you hadn't quoted that, it would be removed. Sorry about that.

But to me, if you can lie and it helps you, then do it.
On the other hand, if you're a lousy liar, you need to avoid lying as much as possible. Again, when you're a lousy liar, you usually consider yourself as a god liar and do it a lot. And of course, lose.

I used to be very clever, always
telling the truth, but leaving
myself a loophole. I learned
that this stopped working,
as people distrusted ANY
deal that I made, knowing
that I had left some way
of slipping out of it. Works
well with a new group though,
as they tend to respect that you
kept your word.

Interesting discussion, people are getting marked before the game starts.

Still we need one more player, something should happen.

How about begging? Or a massive spam campaign?

I'm trying to recruit people all over teh Internet (also advertising M&B ), but people seem to prefer face-to-face games
Still not giving up, though.

I'd be interested in watching.
Are you guys thinking of having
a Black Press? Might be fun to
allow kibitzing through it.

Black pres could be great to watch, but as many of the players are first timers, I think it might get to confusing. Let's keep this simple.

I never heard of diplomacy and have no idea how to play it but I will gladly take part in it.

WE ARE FINALLY FULL!

If you need any help with learning to play just PM someone like calandale or Meretha (or even me, I know the rules ), an4sh. But I'm sure you'll learn them fast. Check http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/home.htm instead of the Wiki.

Thanks everyone, we can start this game after each and everyone of you have verified that they are still here.

And here are the nations (fully randomised):

Cirdan              England
Meretha          Germany
Adaham          Austria
Drachenfaust    France
Leperchaun      Italy
An4Sh            Russia
Sneakey Pete  Turkey

I must say that Adaham must be theluckiest guy in the whole world

After everyone has signed in this thread again, I'm going to start a new one just to keep it simple. I hope we can get this started even today. (assuming An4Sh is ready)

Woohoo I can restore the great soviet nation of Russia and the great party of Lenin back to it's former glory!
