I'm pretty sure many of you are familiar with the game of Diplomacy. For those how have no idea about what I'm talking about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(board_game) or http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/god.htm

Well, I played Diplomacy for the very first time when I was only 11. My game lasted for whole 3 turns, but it still got me and never let go.
Nowdays it's hard to gather a group of seven in the same room for maybe even 6 hours at time. No one has time for that. The Diplomacy community players some games through emails, but I've never taken part of them. I figured that, while this is pretty active forum, maybe I could found those seven players here, in Taleworlds.

These forums suit pretty nicely for Diplomacy. All the negations could be handled via PMs and the game thread can be used for announcements and of course position surveys. I planned that the game could be pretty fast and the deadline of each turn could be 2 days. But it can be chanced though.

Do we have a game here?

This would be the map we would use

If we can get an honest-to-god play-by-email game actually working, I would be so in.  However, I do have my doubts about how well the game will actually be played, since a lot of it is lies and deception, which is harder over the internet.  For the map, by the way, we'd need different icons for ships and fleets.

Hey, a post!

Sorry I don't get the part about "since a lot of it is lies and deception, which is harder over the internet". Isn't the main purpose of the game to lie and backstab?

I have done a quick paint job to add some sort of troop icons. I think they fit in the style of the map.

I could have done a better job, they do their purpose, don't they? The smaller one s are supposed to be armies and bigger fleets.

Its harder to gauge a person's trustworthiness when you can't look them in the eye, look for various twitches and subtle signs of lying.  Vocal patterns, physical reactions, and so forth are all excellent signs that are not unable to be used.  Hell, half of the early game for me is figuring out what people look like when they lie.  I'd lose a production center for knowledge about how a person lies.  Basically, the game loses a lot of its personal touch which is why I like it so.  I'll give it a shot, but we'll see.

Oh yeah, true, the gameplay chances when playing via Internet. Not also you can tell when people lie, the moves have usually been more carefully planned. It's a lot harder to win a solo. Well, most of them that is.

I just looked the Wiki introduction of Diplomacy. It's HUGE! Should I find a shorter one that people might actually read?

oh yeah, I forgot to mention. If someone wishes to play but doesn't own the board, that's OK, because I keep on posting the updated map after every turn so you can plan your moves from there. And if someone has hard time reading on the nonsense rules from Wiki, just PM me and I can explain and try to make them more clear.

I might be intersted, I have to read the wiki a bit first to see if it's something I'll have the patience with.

I'm interested, but I'll have to learn to play first.
The rules are damn simple.  The rulebook is there mainly to act as a trouble-shooting manual, ie, to clarify potentially important problems that could arise.  As it is, though, its really easy to learn how to play.  Simple yet brilliant game.

As we're doing a PBEM game, it shouldn't take that much time for your day.  I mean, I'll be PMing people and machinating and trying to emulate Machiavelli, but if you just want to say "sod it" to all alliances and play solo, its your call.  In that case, it'd take maybe five minutes of your time per turn.  However, just know that in the current game I'm playing, we're currently on 13 hours with 15-20 minute turns (it varies depending on the season).  Expect to be here for a while.  Its not like werewolf, though, where there's a huge surge for a while, then it dies off.

I'm up for a game of Diplo. Porbably would have to be fairly slow-paced, 'though, with maybe three or four turns in a week or something. I don't think we could have it all frenzied-like, unless we're playing a quick round of Gunboat Diplomacy. And even then, it's like chess, takes time to play properly.

Only three more to go! Thanks guys.

And what comes too the deadlines I think that it won't be more than 3 host in a week, unless you really got into this and play your turns fast. I think I'm not going to set any regular deadlines in any specific weekdays, 'cause schools are nearly over and people might have plans witch don't contain Internet for a couple of days.

And last Friday reminded me, even in the developped world a storm can kill your Internet.

Sorry, have a lack of time today, but will look at it tomorrow, promised. Basically I'm interested and thanx for the invite...

Sorry, I just checked my email now, but as I said, I need to go now and will look at it tomorrow. Thanks anyway

I've played a few online versions, and despise it for
this reason. The fact that I never lie in the game
doesn't seem to come across over the net. Means that
my insane threats don't carry. I'm also good at reading
people in person, but can't tell **** from posts.

Still, I know some people prefer the game online, probably
for these very reasons.
