There is a bug I've noticed with diplomacy. I will send out diplomats to other factions to try and get trade, and they will come back as if nothing happened, like when I send good will, declare war, or call for a truce it works fine, but when its anything else instead of the companion being away for 3 days on a diplomatic mission it says "whereabouts unknown trying to rejoin party" so as though they are just kicked out of the party for a while but never do the mission
