Differences of geek and nerd

Geek: Human being.
Nerd: Borg.

Seriously?

Geeks can be cute, but not all the time, in fact it's extremely rare; in other words they don't exactly get laid a lot, but they can be, and that's the important part.
Nerds are the definition of what is un****able, not even to each other! How else do you think they reproduce other than to assimilate other beings?

Nerds are gamers of some kind and know a lot about at least one game and gaming culture (at least around that game if it has a large culture/following, like WoW or Dungeons and Dragons), where as geeks know tecchnical stuff and/or sciences. You can be both and you can also be a nerd for a tv show if you are really into it and know everything more or less (Like Star Trek, but also any show or play such as Friends or Shakespear).

geek  (gk)
n. Slang
1.
a. A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
b. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
2. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.

nerd also nurd  (nûrd)
n. Slang
1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

looks like perfect synonyms to me.

Uh, actually, you're all wrong. The difference lies in the social skills of the person. A geek does have social skills, whereas a nerd doesn't.

Is that explicit? Or does that just mean that a complete paraplegic is also a nerd? Or that people become nerds when they sleep?

...

Nerds often have very little social contact and often are autistic to some degree. As opposed to geeks, who can be very social and outgoing, but still have the same interests as nerds do.

A geek will bite the heads off of chickens and be a circus freak while the nerd definition does not include that detail.

Nerd: intense interest in academic/"productive" subjects. Ex: someone really into computer coding, engineering (likes to build stuff), mathematics, sciences, etc.

Geek: intense interest in non-academic subjects. Ex: anime otaku, serious D&D players, LARPers, cosplayers.

I agree with Raz's perspective on this.
I'm usually reserved when amongst idiots (I'm often reserved), but around strangers I don't really freeze up so to speak. After all, I have worked in retail.
Amongst friends however I'm usually the most outgoing, first to laugh at a joke (first to tell one) first to agree to some hair brained scheme that is not likely to result in immanent death etc etc.
I've know a few nerds in my time and I can truthfully say that their manner is utterly intolerable. They become fixated on one thing, and come hell or high water not for a Mac would they deviate off the chosen topic.
It becomes most frustrating, especially when you realise that they are not going to wake up to the fact that there is more than one discussion going on in the world.

Geek: So are you going to get a new motherboard for your Duel-Core yet?
Nerd: Nah, I'm formulating a theory on what the best possible combination of skills for a Barbarian of the Northern Kingdom {Pause - that "Northern Kingdom" bit is important to him - End Pause} is in Diablo II: The Lord of Destruction. You play a Barbarian right?
Geek: Yeah I play a barbarian, are you going to the fund raiser this weekend?
Nerd: You see... the problem is that to work out a theory of even some validity I would need to spend hundreds of hour exploring all possible paths, since charachter development is such a lengthy and complex cycle.
Geek: Sandra will be there...
Nerd: But I'm determined to make this contribution to the community of DII:TLOD! {Pause - That "T" in upper case is also the stipulated dogma of the said nerd - End Pause}
Geek: Aren't you gonna miss your bus? Shouldn't we go the other way Harry?
Nerd: I've already decided to take two years off after school for the project, then depending on it's success (of which I am certain) I will branch off into the workings of the largely under-valued Holy Paladin. Now the Paladin is-
Geek: Harry! Wake the **** up!

That is my experience. They may be nice people even, but damn they go against my grain like bark against wax.
Irritating buggers.

Now, see, here I think differently than all you. I'll let this article explain:

No. He's wrong.

Nerd: Lack of social skills, obsession over science or technology or some such.
Geek: Obsession over science/tech etc, can often be introverted, but doesn't have the same annoying lack of social awareness.
Dork: Lacks social skills, isn't necessarily a Geek or Nerd.

That is the only way it can be. THUS SPAKE Æ.
