They took their name from one of their first warlords, Wilund the Bold - Valandion, in Calradic - and became known as the Vlandians. Their heavy cavalry, second to none, ran down the Emperor's foes from the Aserai wastes to the distant steppes. But the empire never had as much silver as it needed, and treasury officials soon learned that it could pay its mercenaries with land grants and titles. This was perhaps not the most far-sighted of policies. The Vlandians settled, married, planted farms, and built fortresses. It was not difficult, during the recent interregnum, for Osrac Iron-arm to declare himself king, independent in all but name. He seized the imperial capital of Baravenos and the lands along the coast, and that was how the west was lost to the empire.

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/37

Aww was hoping for Sturgia

Have to say, quite worried about balance with these guys. I totally get why crossbows and two handed swords are being added, given the history and popularity in Warband, but those crossbowmen do look like they've stepped off the field at Agincourt and I feel like my lightly armoured Battanians are about to be hopeless out-gunned.

I swear to God they will never show them.   But then again I kinda feel Sturgians are more like Rus than scandinavian so prepare to be dissapointed.

This blog was good but instead of crossbowmen you should have shown med-high tier horsemen IMO.

For those who are new, Vlandian gameplay:

Amazing blog. Screenshots are beautiful! I was planning to play as a Vlandian after my campaign as a Battanian, but now that I know about their internal problems, I'm thinking twice. Loyalty and fidelity are essential traits to me.

And since the blog goes arround couched lances, will we have a dedicated unity for that? I'm talking about a "Vlandian Lancer" or something like that, so it will be assured that this unity will spawn with a lance, instead of the Swadian Knight, which may or may not spawn with the lance.

Interesting read. Yet another blog which mentions multiple minor factions and yet gives only one example. I wonder if that means 'multiple' is 'two'

Jokes aside, it really gives me hope for some more intricate diplomacy system. Can we hope to use internal bickering to dismantle force that absolutely dominates us on the battlefield? Again, I wonder if Bannerlord will allow PC to become their king's envoy and negotiate on behalf whole faction, while using some kind of diplomatic immunity to dismantle the opposition.

Just please don't make it some game-y 'Vlandians like to quarrel, +10% influence cost'. I'm still afraid this whole influence affair is just a dumbed down replacement for building relations with individual lords and properly winning their favour.

I understand the general love for the Vikings, but what makes you so disappointed by ancient Rus? Moreover, the Russians periodically beat the Scandinavians
Moreover, the soldiers of northern Russia are somewhat similar to the Vikings. For example, Novgorod warriors.

Here is a real reconstruction of the Russian soldiers of the 10-14th century (14th century - only an archer).

Here is a complete translation of the description of the warriors presented in the picture:
1 - noble retinue-Russian of the 10th century. Armed with a Frankish sword, a spear, a bow and arrows. Defensive armor consists of a riveted helmet, covered with a gilt copper sheet, chain mail and a round wooden shield with an iron pommel. (Reconstruction of the Kurgan finds of Smolensk and Chernigov.)
2 - Novgorod warrior of the 11th century. Armed with a dart, a battle ax, a knife. Defensive armor - a shell of narrow iron plates, sewn on a leather base, a wooden amygdala shield. (Reconstruction of the Novgorod archaeological finds and fine art sources.)
3 - Novgorod archer of the XIV century. Armed with a bow with arrows and a dagger, protected by a shell of large iron plates, sewn on a soft base. (Reconstruction of the Novgorod archaeological finds, Novgorod frescoes, miniatures, icons.)
4 - noble vigilante of the XIII century. Armed with a long piercing spear and a sword. Heavy protective weapons consist of a pot-shaped helmet with a mask and chain mail; over the mail shirt - a shell of iron gilded plates, sewn on a soft base or connected to each other; on his hands - iron bracers, on his feet - mailing stockings; a small almond-shaped painted shield. (Reconstruction of archaeological finds of southern and central Russia and miniatures of the Simonovsky-Khludov Psalter.)
5 - Vladimir-Suzdal squadron-swordsman. It is protected by a conical riveted helmet, a barmaid, a shell coat and leggings made of leather, with iron plates riveted from the inside; wooden almond-shaped painted shield. (Reconstruction of archaeological finds and images on the "golden gate" of the Nativity Cathedral in Suzdal.)
Armagan, you can use the images of these warriors for your game.
This is a real historical reconstruction.

interesting faction. Just broke out of the empire (as vassals), which helps explain the crysis over there. Powerful army but lack of unity with the nobles. Mercenary company. Looks like the perfect combination for someone that wants to play a more European medieval like campaign (think of them as crusaders invading Middle East).

no word on ships. Where are the ships??? They came from the sea and live by the coast. Would be nice to see something related to that.

And it seems the next blog is about MP tech stuff. Should make lots of people happy.

Another game (TW Warhammer 2) is doing influence in a way i suspect is what the developers hint at. Influence as resource, means is something you acumulate overtime (by doing missions and winning victories and wealth, i imagine) and then you spend to obtain certain outcomes, like hiring troops, gaining favor, or, in the case of TWW2, also as a diplomatic coin. There you can spend influence to make a faction love or hate another more, or less. If it's something like this i see it working well.

My only problem with this approach is if your influence can be depleted to a point where you have to start from scratch, in a way that is unrealistic. Imagine you have spent all your available influence points in cunning palacian power plots. If you can only gain influence by doing stuff (missions, battles), it means that the size of your army or of your lands becomes meaningless regarding influence and this would be silly, mantaining an army and a piece of land should be a source of influence itself.

I do not really care about real life history lessons a lot when it comes to Warband, I play Nords because of axes, viking armor and infantry prowess. For me factions in warband do not take me back to real history but they give me the chance to write my own story. Mixing Vaegir and Nords into Sturgians was the worst move for me. Nords and Vaegir were both iconic in warband yet we have: Vlandia = Swadia, Khuzait = Khergit, Aserai = Sultanate. The empire apparently has the best heavy infantry from what we have read so Sturgians are probably a different specialization of infantry or they are worse. I also really like the color blue, I live on an island and in general I always loved gazing at the ocean. Battanians were a very cool introduction, they seem very pagan-like and have units like Úlfhéðnar so if Sturgians turn out to be bad, I'll play Battanians. I simply hope that clans work like Knighthoods do in prophecy of pendor, each faction has them and they produce certain specialiaztion knights. So if I play a Sturgian and want to recruit heavy infantry, I'd love if we could get them from 'Nord' clan or something. We have no info on Sturgians except from one gameplay video, so I still wait to see who they really are.

Also I am not dissapointed when it comes to Rus folk, but how they replaced Nords. Rus should be in-game in the form of Vaegir ancestors. I heavily dislike the fact that we have 3 empire nations because they look quite identical from the gameplay videos. Not twin-like identical but still, identical.

Lastly, question for the next blog: In warband ping played a huge role on multiplayer, probably more than any other game I have ever played, including twitch based shooters. Will there be some kind of latency tool that do not put medium-higher ping players in disadvantage when it comes to melee? Warband had several issues of animation frame skipping (if you google these issues, you will see a huge list of players asking: How the enemy attacks so fast yet I attack so slow?) Keep in mind, I do not talk about 100+ ping. I talk about the range of 50-90. I am aware that the game is playable with over 50 ping, but real issues arise when you play melee with over 80, which makes it playable but still unfun, unless you play ranged.

I love it, I'm mainly a single player M&B player so I love the blogs laying out the single player campaign features.

I'm assuming these are the replacements for the Swabians? Or will they still be in this game? Maybe as a minor faction associated with the Vlandians?

I actually hope the Sturgians are going to be Rus-inspired. One one hand, it's going to be something else, but on the other hand, it won't be too far off from what the people would expect from a "Nordic" faction. I do understand that these Viking guys were popularized in TV series and history in general, but it doesn't mean a Rus type of faction would be less cool. Just give it a chance.

As I have mentioned, I'm annoyed at how they seem to have replaced Nords, I have absolutely no problem with Rus-inspired factions, Vaegir was actually my second favourite. I have been a fanboy of Vikings since the very first Amon amarth and Enslaved albums . Although I do like how they are portrayed in the show Vikings, they feel 'right' but I have seen discussions at how they got 'fancied' up with face tattoos and weird hairstyles.

Sturgians will be inspired by the Rus and Principality of Kiev, which had Scandinavian influence mainly from the Svears. They appear to have a Scandinavian and Slavic look.

Even if the Sturgians happen to be Rus-inspired, all the hope goes towards the minor factions around them. I'm sure TaleWorlds will portray them in one way or the other.

As I have mentioned a couple of months ago, the supposed Sturgian architecture strongly points towards the Russians:
