Dev Blog 21/11/19

Users who are viewing this thread

In this week’s blog, we want to take a step back from Bannerlord (just for a brief moment!) to show you something we have been working on recently: our new look website! There are still a few small tweaks and touch-ups to do, but we wanted to take this opportunity to share it with you now so that we could hear your thoughts and feedback before decommissioning our current site.

I'd you suggest to write something about factions in the features tab, just like you did for Warband on the old site.

The videos on the media tab could be sorted a bit, by placing them in separate groups: singleplayer and multiplayer. Also, the 2012 teaser may do more hard than good to marketing, because that's the first thing people are going to click on. It's dated and has nothing to show really.

I can't see it. Site ain't loading. The forums will stay the same though, right?

They're pretty much the best looking forums I have ever seen. And most pleasant on the eyes, too.

EDIT: New forums. Eh. ok.

The old one had its charm, but not much more going for it. This one's better, carry on.

I was looking at the screenshots (not many, just six at the moment!) and there is an attractive new image of the full Calradian map, looking almost like a satellite image. It looks to me as though the Aserai area, for one, has been reworked a bit (unless I wasn't paying attention to changes in the last year or so). It did't really have any green areas before, being uniformly desert, whereas now it seems there are definite green areas around the small inland sea/large lake and along a river running into this body of water from the south. I think that river is new in itself. The distribution of mountains here is also more regular, forming a broken barrier between the desert and the lakeside fertile lands. The mountains here aren't the standard peaks, but instead plateaus. It makes more sense (because mountains channel rain clouds to or away from certain areas in reality) and looks more natural, with a varied look to the terrain (not just sandy desert and grassland).

I didn't pay much attention to it on the site, but looking at it again there is something I really like- the trees. The structure of the plants is something that was always lacking, but now it is as good as the texture work. I just realised the small ones are even rather realistically jutting out of the snow. I may have missed such work before in Bannerlord, but as far as I know these are the best trees and plants I have ever seen in the series, I could be looking at plants from my local area. I also enjoy the lighting, shadows and snow-haze created by the troops' passage, and that one can see (when zooming in) the many soldiers further into the backround beyond the foreground horsemen.

On the other hand, the way the soldiers all hold their weapons at the same angle and have the same posture looks a bit awkward. There is some variety in armour, but not much, and all the horses are identically barded (though I do rather like the material in the saddle area).

As a last observation; I like the features section- we have one at last! Gives a broad overview of the game, and some nice screenshots to go with it.

Some people were complaining about scabbards and global illumination, and then BAM! here's your fortnightly devblog

Ps: the new site is looking good, kudos to whoever designed it!

Nice new website. It's good to see you guys finally decided to start working on something you said like... two years ago that was already being worked on. Looks pretty solid.

This new picture looks also kinda nice, but not too much.

Am I dumb or what? How did I not see that in the blog?

Not too much? Looks absolutely breathtaking. I actually have a hunch they definitely got inspired by the Polished Landscapes mod. And I can see why. I could not be happier that wintery trees look like this.

Thanks for the effort! For me, the "not too much" part is the lack of variety in armors and horses. The whole group sits on the same charger covered by the same tablecloth, and the horsemen shares two sets of armors, even the helmets are matching per set, so it has a clone army or RTS game feeling. I would like to see a minimal individuality among the troops at least. The background is improved, no doubt.

Holy crap, is this the moment we realize Yaga was just a Dan's dupe account for all this time?

I will not go into the debate (again) if this news should be part of a devblog; my position is clear on this.

That said, the website is simply correct; standard I would say; it certainly not breathtaking.  I would also like to compliment the designers because both the simple ones and the more elaborate ones have tedious work behind them. Personally I think that a website style like wargaming would have worked better for you.

It is your product and do what you want with it; but as others have commented, all material from two years ago should not appear. It does you more harm than good.
On the contrary, I am especially excited to see how the new forums have been with the new XenForo system.

The legs of the horsemen seem very short.

Will Bannerlord also be available in Epic store?
I don't use it personally (yet) but just mostly wondering.

And another thing, just an idea; Since all the Mount & Blade's have so many mods and with the extensive modding support for Bannerlord there certainly will be lots more, maybe there could be a modding page in the new website? Yes, I know there is steam workshop but that's only if you play via steam, and I'm aware of popular modding sites and also that people upload mods on the forums- but it would be simpler and easier both to manage but also to find mods if they were all on a nicely designed place that's ment just for them.

For Epic, I can't confirm this either way for you right now but I can say that you will know before the game goes on sale which store fronts the game will be on (other than Steam of course which is obviously confirmed right now!).

As for modding, you should check back next week to see what we have done with the forums.

Great suggestion about the factions! And the video was there as a placeholder and seems to have been left there accidently, thanks for the heads up!
