But, it is Thursday my dudes and the show must go on... Instead, in this week’s blog, we will talk about how we approach game design here at TaleWorlds, giving you a brief insight into the general process of taking an idea and turning it into a game feature.

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/82

at some point the discussion always gets off topic here

at some point being page 1? That is a record, no?

TW already talked about their growing pains between the Warband and Bannerlord projects (from a small dev group to a medium size one), so it is interesting to get a bit more of info on their day to day related to design. It is the sort of stuff that only people that worked on different companies over their career can understand, so it is not a surprise that many (the younger fans or the ones with jobs in fields where they dont experiment those environments cant really relate to).

you guys (TW) should create a documentary (post release) to talk about the making of Bannerlord. Good PR and also nice info to any inspiring game devs and small studios. Of course there is no perfect path or win-win-win scenario, but the ones that make it to the end are the ones that can learn with their mistakes and grow with them.

Well, so what now?

Dear developers! If you are reading this then I ask you, in each blog to indicate how much the game is ready in % ratio! So that regular users and your fans can know when the favorite part of the MB series will be released by all of us.

Edith:Fixed formatting.

Even if we are all off topic now, the conversation is nice when there are no trolls around, see what I mean?

my 2 cents in game design after effectively studying it for 3 years in University:

Game Design requires a vision that almost nobody has, but everyone wants to believe they have.

IE: Most people are not fit for the job, and many unfit people are in fact doing it without having the capabilities :fruity:

Maybe this isn't helpful, but I just got the urge to speak up because reasons:

I am not saying people can't say that they want to know a release date, and I am not saying that posting "when tho" isn't valid. What I am saying is we get it, we got it, and we don't need to hear[read] about it anymore. We all want the game, we all fall somewhere on the spectrum of impatience with TW, but really, raving in the forums is like yelling at the TV when your favorite team isn't doing well. It just creates useless noise.

Thing about internet is there are hundreds of ppl around the world, who do not share your level of knowledge about Bannerlord. For example me. I haven't watched all videos from all sources, I haven't read all articles, haven't translated them from turkish or sth. I haven't even watched single gamescom demo for entire 30 mins. I kinda feel bored watching other ppl playing, unless they are masters of a game I want to be great at and it's for learning purposes.

Yet I come here every now and than to find sth new about Bannerlord.

I'm not a game dev. I read with interest few posts in this discussion. Facts and arguments were provided by both sides (well, by one side, other replied with "imho"). I think avarage lurker will have an easy time deciding who is closer to the truth in this debate.

Are you tired with "bannerlord when" question?
Just make a faq explanatory post with stuff like that and paste a link.

Nice with a blog no matter what. I realise it is some posts back, but I also really like the improved way the banners are being held.

Also, I am a big fan of directional blocking with shields, it has always bugged me that using a shield did not involve more player skill. Especially considering how actively people are using shields in real life.

In the context of this blog, a Game Designer for Bannerlord is a level designer within the predetermined structure of the successful Mount & Blade franchise. Armagan’s vision won’t change unless Bannerlord flops commercially.

All successful projects need coherent direction, but vision is impotent on its own. Look at these forums - ideas are cheap, everyone has them. Only a limited number of people graft for the years required to turn their ideas into reality. How many of us would risk bankrupting our families to bankroll our dreams?

Even great game ideas, perfectly executed can fail. For viral success, they also need to be the right game at the right moment to strike a chord with the playing and paying audience. Armagan couldn’t find a publisher for his original part finished version of Mount & Blade. Our game could have died there and then. He was persistent and lucky that his timing allowed him to develop an online community and momentum without a publisher’s backing.

I hope whatever you learned in your 3 years at university helps you succeed, but you will find out that theory and practice are seldom the same thing.

Thanks buddy, but seriously now what?

Ok... hey, I just realized something. The part of the armor on the following picture that covers the shoulders is actually a different item, they are separated from the body armor.

Could it mean, that it is the same situation with all Khuzait armors?

Tell that to Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Page & Sergey Brin, Hironobu Sakaguchi... You name it... Not me, I'm just the messenger...

I haven't watched all the videos, or read all the blogs, let know anymore than you or probably most people. But I have other things in life to occupy me. I think the "Bannerlord when tho" crowd need more hobbies and pastimes. Much like my wife.

So how many banners can you wear at the same time?

Dual wield the large banners, have heraldic armor with the banner on it and wear a helmet with an extra little banner on top of it? Banner on the shield as well!?

What does Steve Jobs even has to do with this?
Vision, basically vision isn't about ideas or sight, it's about the ability to envision stuff and know how to execute it through other people's talents and overcome challenges (like tech limitations) to ensure the envisioned "whatever" actually hits reality...

When I've said that to properly be a Game Designer one must have vision (which's one of the rarest talents/skills), I was referring to that, but the other dude simply took it as something else due to the fact that he himself doesn't understand what vision means, that's how incredibly difficult and rare it is...

Visionaries always manage to make things happen, some are more successful than others depending on their field of expertise, but all manage to execute things without much trouble due to the fact that they know how to make the wheels turn, in other words, they can be negligible regarding practical skills like programming or producing art, or whatever, but they always know how all things are done, enough to lead teams of talented individuals towards an goal. In Game Design the job implies such talent/skills due to how a Game Designer must work and what a Game Designer must do, in practicality most Game Designers are incompetent, thus why many games are so bad, whilst we get rare pearls from time to time. In some cases the actual titled Game Designer doesn't even fill the role, and it ends up being taken by others, that was the case with Morrowind and Oblivion, Tedd Howard only really took the lead alone in Skyrim, and we saw how that ended... So, I was simply pointing out that it is quite difficult to find good GDs, most are handicapped to do the job.

Also, visionaries are capable of foreseeing the projects they are going to do beforehand, like a mental picture of the fully developed product / objective / whatever... They know how it'll be and how it'll work, long before anyone has even a grasp of how it'll be, but they'll rarely reveal it since they know that they'll have to adapt to limitations...

We could nif-scope a bunch of banners on all items, then release it as an OSP lol
