Why are people so against a like button? Twitter, facebook, reddit, youtube, or pretty much every single modern social media added them in. Glad to see Taleworlds wants to modernize from this decade old layout. Gets hard to type and browse on my phone.

because the like button is the reason twitter, facebook, youtube, reddit, and pretty much every modern social media website is such a cesspit hellsite that actively ruins any form of discussion taking place therein.

Replies won’t get sorted out by reactions as far as I saw so that’s technically not an issue, people would still read chronologically.

There’s great arguments for (increased engagement) and against (lack of discourse) reactions, I guess time will tell if they work for our community or not

Also they shouldn’t be a big red +1 but hopefully more “memey” with time.

Remember guys that not everything is set in stone and that the forums will evolve and change with feedback and time.

I can’t wait to see your feedback once the forums launch  and working as a community to make these new forums our home.

Reactions are fine.
+1 reply-posts are unnecessary clutter in comparison to a like button. If you have extra argument to add you can obviously make a further post, if not, just hit a +1 (as several people above could've done in response to Nuqar's post)
The extra effort required to post additionally means you get a less accurate representation of your user-base than a simple button press, which has much less effort buy-in.
Also mildly, it helps avoid biases by anonymizing the opinions to a degree, but this admittedly can be both good and bad.

There's no reason to be dismissive of peoples' opinions simply because they don't want to post. Plenty of people are lurkers for whatever reason, and an anonymous reaction lets them join in on a conversation, however slim it is.

Big social media giants have no direct moderation and use upvotes to try and curate media on an enormous scale. Post reacts control the way people see information by exploiting our herd mentality. Which of the following posts makes you more likely to want to support it?

They are also cesspools. The top comments on YouTube videos for example are usually complete trash. At best they are tired unfunny memes, at worse they are reprehensible. On Facebook, people who can't defend their opinions in text (neo-nazis, rape apologists, pedophiles etc) will resort to upvoting a comment instead. I've seen hundreds of comments which overtly condone genocide which have hundreds of upvotes but few replies. Even if you just have positive upvotes you give extra power to people who don't bother posting because they can't argue their position, and give them the same amount of "visibility" as someone who can.

I don't know why you would use any of these websites as positive examples of online communities when they are essentially digital totalitarian dictatorships.

People already get warned for spamming +1.

Why do people who don't post need to be allowed to contribute to a conversation?

I think you should stop browse conservative leaning news sites and just take the time to find a community or subreddit you like. There are still discussions and insight in subreddits I browse, particularly, because I love to write books r/writing helped me find answers on things I am having trouble on. The only people being affected by a downvotes I seen are unfunny people that think a jojo reference in 2020 is funny or right wing trolls trying to say <racial slurs> or calling someone a libtard. I haven't went on twitter or facebook in years but the few times I visited I do see people putting up long political essays spawn over multiple tweets. You just need to look for a good place and ignore what you don't like

"People already get warned for spamming +1."
"What's actually the difference between these reactions and the +1 replies? What does the former add to the forums which the latter doesn't?"

It offers a way to minimize spam via offering a way to agree/disagree with a reaction instead of a "+1".
You asked what it offered, I answered.

"Why do people who don't post need to be allowed to contribute to a conversation?"

Why not? Who says posting has to be the definitive and only way to do it? Tradition?
A reaction is an expression of their support and opinion, the same as me posting this is an expression of mine.
Are you also dismissive of polls?

Heres how you can find a subreddit you like on reddit. Cant speak for the other sites but reddit is pretty popular.

Lets pretend you're a filthy weeb and want to see some anime, since reddit has a subreddit for almost everything you can just type a keyword here

reddit.com/r/(keyword)

or just go on the front page and use the search bar. I personally dont use it cause I just add reddit after my google searches since reddit search is terrible, but thats one way you can find communities you like.

the only good reddit communities are those which, completely coincidentally i'm sure, hide votes/scores for 24h to mitigate the negative repercussions inherent to karma systems.

stop assuming you know how i browse.

I think this is a very valid statement. I liked a lot of what I read in the new blog but I'm definitely a little apprehensive about the "reaction" button feature.

Agreed. These sites are notorious for being hives of toxicity and/or misinforming echo-chambers. Not exactly stellar examples. However, I think sankoku's argument here was about modernity... though not all modern features are necessarily good.

The issue I have with this is: I don't understand how clicking a like button can be equated with joining a conversation. I'm not exactly sure how a reaction button adds anything to a conversation. I feel that in some ways it may curtail constructive discourse - it helps to remove the impetus to actually post words and justify why exactly a person agrees, or disagrees with a statement... Kind of like what I'm doing right now.

There could be an argument to be made that "reaction" buttons facilitate the debasement of conversations... just as Kentucky has been valiantly trying to argue.

Got to agree with Jacob here.  People who can't form a coherent thought should not be a part of any conversation.

You sound like aristocrats talking about peasants before democracy ever existed, I agree at some form that social media are trash and arguments turn into popularity contests, but people who can't argue like you pair of argument gods have the right to have an opinion too and how else do we give our support to an idea we agree to if not by a using a +1. People do it in this forum already so stop complaining

On the other hand I'm really happy for the update
