The one on the left is showing a flat ambient light while the one on the right uses Global Illumination to determine where the light bounces.

Global Illumination has been around in video games for ages, even games like Half Life 1 employ GI of some kind, but in modern games it's absolutely essential to prevent everything from looking flat and ugly.

Look at the image in the top left (No GI or ambient light at all) compared to all the others (GI).

What exactly are the comparison photos showing in this blog?

Light rays are bouncing from surfaces with a reduced intensity, that's why things in shadow are not totally black. You can see the color and texture of their surfaces to some extent.
Comparing the pictures, there are no dark corners on the left image, because that ambience light is faked. Every surface in shadow has the same amount of visibility. It's flat just like in Warband. On the right, ambience light is counted from surface to surface, so the shading is realistic and the picture has more depth.

Very cool image!

Obviously you've run out of things to talk about. Just stop the "weekly" blogs already they're low quality and you're already goin weeks at a time without posting. Unprofessional.

The described work behind global illumination, inside a custom game engine, seems professional to me. I don't know what they're talking about specifically, but I can see some dedication here and there. What's the point knowing everything of the game months before? These are blogs intended to involve the community, I guess. They can't publish hours and hours of gameplay mechanics and stuff in videos in the blogs. That's not the point. Sometimes, though, they come out with some interesting readings about mechanics and particular things which obviously are greatly appreciated (and maybe they publish them in a bad form, with not enough in blog resources etc. but it's ok come on).

I don't get all the hate this blog got.

I think it's a fairly good one, especially compared with the previous which was an obvious piece of advertising disguised as devblog.

It's a DEVBLOG not a GAMEPLAYBLOG. If you dont even know what you're looking at and what kind of blogg you're reading you should'nt even comment on it. It's like getting angry when watching Planet Earth because you wanted a sci-fi.

I think the blog was good, I'm not super into the subject but it's nice to know that we will have this kind of lumination in the game. If we did'nt it would be unplayable by todays standards.

After so many years of waiting, countless cycles of hype and chill about content and release, most of the fans seeking for something more than a claim that the game graphic technically will be up to standards. This blog is not bad, just expired.

I agree that it is underwhelming and surely alot more so for some people but that's not the the point.

Believe me when I tell you mate, yes, it's definitely the point.

I like how technical this is with reference to papers. People who dislike this don't get it. Global illumination is heavy on FPS, for a game like bannerlord we want maximum visual quality and minimum fps drop. I don't want to spend 10 hours optimising the game and still get ****ty FPS. Not like some other companies who don't give a **** (cough, R* Red dead redemption 2, cough).

No it really is'nt the point. The promise of this blog is to uppdate about the development of the game. Belive me, just because I dont have a higher rank in this forum I've followed this game development since it started and I can understand the frustration but it's also your own fault if you get frustrated because you expect something out of these bloggs that was never point of them to begin with.
