Lighting is an extremely important aspect of any modern game. Bad lighting can make the most detailed models and textures seem drab and lifeless, while good lighting helps to bring together the different visual elements on-screen to provide a more realistic and aesthetically pleasing polish.

Interesting blog. How long it will take modders to bake GI into a scene using this approach?

I hope it happens during every scene loading without any magic. Baking the the lights outside the engine, and retexturing the scene with the illuminated ones can be done even for Warband. It would need tons of texture loading, but it's possible.

No it really is'nt the point. The promise of this blog is to uppdate about the development of the game. Belive me, just because I dont have a higher rank in this forum I've followed this game development since it started and I can understand the frustration but it's also your own fault if you get frustrated because you expect something out of these bloggs that was never point of them to begin with.

Opinion and ass; everybody has one and yours is as valid as mine despite our ranks here. What I mean is that (and even more so with your global knowledge of Bannerlord's development process) the " meet the GI" topic within a blog would have been acceptable a couple of years ago; now I'm inclined to think not. After all we are talking about a game and the GI is taken for granted within the game as we are in the leap to 2020. What do I think they should start talking about? Clearly about everything here: What else remains to be explained?because everything on the list is what I'm going to have fun with, right?

And no, I'm not going to get into the debate; I fervently think that commenting on features of a sandbox game isn't a spoiler to the user's playable experience.

You guys are all angry but this blog gave us a valuable information that we didn't know: the process for baking GI is all automatized, we just have to activate it by pressing a button in the editor.

I suppose it have to be baked after every change to the scene.

Exactly, this blog is good for modders knowing they can use GI in an optimised way and how to do it. It's exciting. I hope you guys who hate on this blog get the crappiest optimisation for all other future games you play. Be thankful we got companies that put so much effort into optimisation.

Global Illumination
We introduced a new global illumination system to the engine which can correctly illuminate both static and dynamic objects. It is based on a pre-baked system called "Precomputed Radiance Transfer". It is independent from the atmosphere, which is a must for a game like Bannerlord where you will enter a scene at different times of the day. The system saves the illumination data to probes inside a regular grid. We developed lots of automatic placement tools so that the work required by artists to bake the scenes is kept to a minimal. Modders will be able to bake GI to their scenes using these tools.

Well, we already knew "something" about it...it would be nice to know in the same way (what less!) about advanced diplomacy, dynasties, etc...

---
In terms of time, in Unity what does it take...5/8 h of baking more or less?

I definitely agree a video, even 30 seconds long, would have been very helpful with demonstrating the lighting, but that said this was enjoyable to see nonetheless.

Ahh, fresh meat!
From 0:30 - the dynamic stuff - my eyes have stucked at the bottom of the second floor. Looks like it's light intensity doesn't change while the sun goes. Is that already pre rendered ambience from a fixed lightsource?

Perhaps you'd also like to know there are carryable torches too...

information about real features especially, and a blog post on global illumination we have already had one as mentioned above

Joined just to say how frustrated I am by the comments. I've been following closely since the teaser in 2012 and have refrained from commenting so far, but I don't want the devs to be discouraged by a community who can't see that a seemingly simple addition like this requires a decent amount of time throughout a work week. It's obvious that those who are frustrated are not software developers, or have never read a scientific journal to understand and implement a technology. Any feature like this takes longer than anticipated, but is entirely worthwhile. I understand the community who are frustrated, but reading this blog demonstrates how much effort and time goes into making every small feature possible. The research, the discussion, the development, the testing and the bugs.

IMO DayZ's realism was affected by the poor lighting engine which allowed you to see clearly in a room from a great distance.

I applaud Taleworlds for not cashing out like so many studios these days, who release a game in an eternal 'beta'. For instance Bohemia Interactive realised they would not make any more money even if they released a heavily improved DayZ, as everyone has already bought the beta. Instead they released the same half finished game on consoles to rake in more money, but still never make small improvements like this GI. Rushing can only result in wasted potential.

tl;dr /rant Devs keep it up and don't be discouraged by a noisy impatient few.

Obviously not.

I think that an early access is lesser then a beta, but costs money. So, there's no guarantee that it won't turn into a BannerLordZ. Of course the theme is less popular then zombies were back then, so it would be obviously a worse - and slow - attempt for a cash grab.

Just thought of this for some reason; I’d really like a blog on the replay feature. Gonna be really cool if you could rewatch any battle/match in free roam camera.

I've thought of that a lot since playing the beta, thinking how useful it would be to easily capture footage of bugs to upload to the forum. I hope it's still part of the game, because I don't think it's been mentioned since we heard about it years ago.

Yeah it better be. I was nervous about this the same way i was that the barter system had been removed, but recently i found a gamescom demo video which contained a good look at the bartering, so it gave me hope for this as well.

I just picturing people making super dramatic battle scenes with it.

The EA trailer was made with that editor, so we know for sure it's there.
