Creating animations for a video game might look similar than doing it for a film or TV show, but it’s actually quite different – and much more complex. An animated character in a video game is not linear: it has to answer to the players’ feedback, be it because you should be able to direct its movement (if it’s the protagonist) or because it responds to your decisions (if it’s an NPC). Thus, on top of the artistic work, there is a technical side of things to make them look and feel natural, transitioning seamlessly from one animation to the next. And in a game such as Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, where combat is so important, animation plays a key role in its gameplay: it gives you the visual feedback that you need in order to fight effectively, letting you know (in a subtle way) what your opponent is about to do. This is why Olcay’s work is so important, and today he will share with us some details about what he is doing for Bannerlord.

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/63

Immersive Animations, I love it. This game will be amazing and the potential for mods is mind blowing. We’ll see all sorts of crazy things.

I hope that a stealth mechanic would be possible to add in a mod. I don’t expect it to be in game but if there was groundwork for stealth mechanics then there is nothing mods couldn’t do with this game.

Another great camel gif - I’m definitely riding camels and its neck animation/rigging looks perfect for a dragon mod/hack. Thanks TW for allowing us to mod custom mounts in Bannerlord.

Questions for Gökçen “Cuce” Karaağaç - where have you hidden the nervous man? Is there any prospect of exploring a cave system in Bannerlord?

Great blog. It is encouraging to hear that Olcay is now working on the background NPC animations. I'm really looking forward to BL but I have to agree that there seems to be a little too much sand / dust being kicked up by the camel but then again maybe it is in a very dusty area.

I'm sure that these minor items will all be addressed during the Beta. Ummm …… which is starting when …………… Callum?

The ability to customize animations seems like it's going to have a lot of potential, and will be very handy for total conversion mods that require different animations like when using muskets or fantasy weapons. Really excited in that regard.

the animations do look good. it's just annoying that they make me wish the ground would actually change through them (leaving footprints but also seeing sand get tilled. actual sand.)

The scythe actually cuts, he's just missing because of his low accuracy. Why do you think he's cutting the same spot over and over?

Stealth cant work in SP anyhows as the AI always knows where the enemies are -there is no LOS type detection\pathfinding AFAIK.

On topic -great to see this blog, animations truly are the key of this series as thats what creates a fun and interesting combat system that never really gets old. So many copycat games fail in the animation field which ultimately kills the game. Doesnt seem like questions get answered here by Devs but one big problem o the series has always been that once an enemy dies (ragdolled) he immediately "ghosts", meaning loses physics and the AI swinging behind him hits you straight through their ghostly body which is essentially a cheap hit.

Overall looks great (specially those camels)

The moment I saw the camel gif I was satisfied. And the way he is kicking the sand

Nice to see again that npcs will actually doing stuff at villages, not just walking pointlessly.

FANTASTIC !! great to see members of the Commonwealth of Peasantry hard at work ... now could we see them in a piked phalanx ????? :fruity:

Warbands greatest claim to fame is its REALISTIC animations ... FEELS so natural .. Bannerlords looks better !

Well done.
